QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

OSU’s Smith makes great move off the field

Somehow, it slipped by with about the same notice as a 10-yard pass completion in the fourth quarter of a blowout win.
Strangely, Ohio State gave the accomplishment little more advance publicity than, say, a mid-week softball game.
But on June 11 at Ohio Stadium, Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith graduated with a degree in communications.
He did it four years, a year quicker than most college football players in high-profile programs who take a redshirt year earn their degrees. And a lifetime quicker than some athletes get theirs.
Smith has given people opportunities to question his judgment before. But this was an accomplishment that deserves sustained applause.
At Ohio State, Smith has been suspended for taking money from a booster, faced a disorderly conduct complaint for a late-night parking lot shoving match and complained passionately (and correctly) in 2004 that he should be getting more playing time.
In high school, he transferred to Cleveland Glenville after being suspended at Lakewood St. Edward for giving a Toledo St. John player a concussion with a deliberate elbow to the head in a basketball game.
He even described his younger self as a “knucklehead” to one writer earlier this year and talked about the many heart-to-heart talks he’d had with authority figures.
With that history, it’s understandable if some people want to inject a note of caution into any projections about Smith’s future.
But on June 11, he seemed to be on top of his game on and off the field.
Going into this season, he is one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy after a brilliant finish to his junior season. His team is being talked about as a contender for the national championship. And he’s got his degree.
If the race for the Heisman Trophy is between Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and Smith, the OSU quarterback took the early lead with his performance in the Fiesta Bowl when he amassed 408 yards total offense in a 34-20 win over the Fighting Irish.
Winning the Heisman Trophy is the sort of thing that can get a football player’s picture on billboards.
Smith is already on billboards, though, and his degree is part of the reason.
The Cleveland public school system put up billboards this spring featuring pictures of Smith and Ted Ginn Jr. as part of its “Stay in School” program, aimed at inner-city students.
The message under the pictures of the two Ohio State players says, “Gangs didn’t get me here. Discipline, respect and hard work did.”
If Smith delivers that message on and off the field, he will be an award winner, with or without a Heisman.

SMITH GRADUATION

A college football insider tells us Troy Smith is making strides beyond anyone’s imagination as he continues to study film and learn the nuances behind Ohio State’s offense. The Buckeye quarterback recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Asked if he would take cream puff classes like Southern Cal’s Matt Leinart did — including ballroom dancing — Smith smiled.

“No way,” he said. “That stuff’s not for me.”

Smith’s degree is in mass communication.

“I’m thinking about going for a second degree, but I haven’t made up my mind.”

Troy just continues to impress me. I hope that his extra free time will mean he'll carve of defenses even more since he'll have that extra time for the film room. I read earlier in the year that he wants to know the center position by heart too so that he'll know exactly where everyone is going. This could be a fun year.....

OSU's Smith makes good impression
More often than not, when a college athlete is in the news for something that takes place off the field, it's rarely ever a good thing.

The Duke lacrosse team can't seem to shake trouble, J.J. Redick was busted for driving under the influence and Santonio Homes was arrested in Miami for disorderly conduct.

But Troy Smith, the star quarterback of Ohio State, recently made the news for something that should be admired.

He finished his degree in four years earlier this summer.

To put that accomplishment in perspective, let's just say the odds are better that President Bush will bring his approval rating up than an athlete at a football factory such as OSU earning his degree on time.

Perhaps it is only appropriate, though, that Smith has overcome the adversity he has faced in his life, much of it brought on by his own un-wise decisions.

Smith once took money from a booster and was benched for a bowl game because of his actions.

In high school, he gave a Toledo St. John's player a concussion with a deliberate elbow to the head during a basketball game, prompting his transfer from Lakewood St. Edward to Glenville.

Any of those incidents could have marked the end of the road for Smith.

He could have faded from the sports landscape and ended up on some where are they now special.

Or worse yet, on a VHI reality show for washed up sports stars.

But Smith put his troubled past behind him and has helped bring the swagger back to the Buckeyes.

Last January, he rolled up 408 yards of total offense in OSU's 34-20 win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl,.

The hopes and dreams of a national championship for the Buckeyes this season will rest on his shoulders.

Forget about statistics for a moment, though, and consider that Smith has become a role model for children growing up in the inner city of Cleveland.

He and teammate Tedd Ginn Jr. are on billboards as part of the school system's attempt to encourage children to stay in school.

The message under their pictures talks about how gangs didn't get Smith and Ginn to OSU.

Instead, it took discipline, respect and hard work to achieve success on the field and in the classroom.

There is a good chance Smith will lead the Buckeyes to a national championship this year.

But even if he falls short in his quest, no one should complain.

The pain of not winning a championship will go away.

A college degree will be with Smith for a lifetime, and there is something to be said for that.

Troy's finish to the 2005 season really reminds me of how Vince Young finished 2004.... a guy who had started the season as a great athlete and matured during the season to become a complete quarterback.

I said this time last year that I felt that OSU would win because I wasnt convinced that Young could beat the buckeyes with his arm. He did. He should have won the Heisman not Bush but thats another topic.

Young was the single biggest component to Texas winning the MNC.

When Troy came onto the field for the last drive against Michigan I was confidant that he would lead us to the victory- that coupled with his show against Notre Dame makes me think that this can be a very special year for Troy.

Let's just hope he picks up right where he left off.

If we're to believe everything we're reading about him these days, I wouldn't worry. I think we'll all get our wish.

2006 CFN Preseason Second Team All-American
Troy Smith, Sr. Ohio State - 149-237, 2,283 yds, 63%, 16 TD, 4 INT, 136 carries, 611 yds, 4.5 ypc, 11 TD
Could Smith be this year's version of Vince Young and be a do-it-all star who carries his team to a title? After being suspended for the season opener and coming off the bench for the Texas game, he took over and was fantastic showing off an accurate arm along with tremendous rushing skills. He's not a bomber, but he's a great decision maker who's great at making big plays and is icy cool in the clutch. A perfect fit for the read-option offense, he'll be a statistical machine who could be a front-runner for the Heisman if he can pull off a win at Texas.
