QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

The kid has had a month to get together with his teammates. A month. Timing takes time. If he gets to finish out the year and compete for a starting job with the 49ers next season, he has a great chance to be a starter in this league. All I heard on the radio last night from the fucking retards on AZ Cardinals radio, is that he is short. "Keep him in the pocket and dont let him see downfield." What a bunch of fucking idiots. Troy just needs time to get to know his recievers better. He already is a heads and shoulders better leader on that offense than anyone else, even Singletary.

And already, by all accounts, he has won/earned the confidence of his teammates.

This.

The pitiful thing is that a majority of 49ers fans are already talking about wanting a QB with the first pick in the draft. How about some Olinemen? How about some safeties that can play at this level? How about opening up the playbook and letting Troy learn the team better? Frackin idiots!!

I love Troy Smith - he's my favorite Buckeye QB ever. But I don't think he's ever going to be an elite NFL QB. I see him as a tremendous leader who has the skill and talent to be a top backup or middle-of-the-road starter in the NFL. Consequently, if I were a Niners fan I'd love to see my team get a QB the caliber of Matt Ryan or Sam Bradford.

With that being said, I don't know that such a QB will be available in this draft.

Yeah honestly the only QB I see of that caliber is Luck. Mallet as all the arm and tools but I question his decisionmaking from the games I've watched this year. Too many times he's looked like bad Brett Favre out there and if they win too many more games they'd never have the chance to draft either.

Here's to the 9ers winning out! :osu:

I tend to agree. I just don't think Troy has the accuracy to be an elite QB in the NFL.

He's been pretty brutal on short + intermediate routes so far.

That will probably change a little bit when he gets more familiar with his receivers and the 49ers offensive "scheme" but I also kinda think NFL accuracy is something you either have or don't have.

I hope I'm wrong and I hope the 9ers bring him back to at least compete for the job next year, but I'm not sold on him being a plus starter yet.

Heck, I like what I see. Even the anncrs in different games were talking Troy up. Like someone else said, give him a whole off-season with this team, especially the WRs, and the playbook.

Besides, who knows what the draft brings. They already have two #1 QBs who Troy plays better than. He's even played better than the QBs that were drafted before him. They do have that QB on the practice squad that they say has potential, but he doesn't sound like the brightest guy.

First of all. Man, has the 49ers decision making, with regard to QBs in the draft, been horrible over the last decade. Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers.....Does anyone remember Jim Drunkenmiller?

Elite quarterback is an awfully high standard to hold Troy to. I would be happy if Troy started for a few years as a good or even decent NFL QB. As you said, a middle of the road starting QB. There are so few QBs that deserve the title of "elite NFL QB." Still, in my opinion, there is no way that we can accurately assess Troy's potential as a QB right now. Ask just about any "expert" and they will go on and on about how important training camp is. Troy didn't get that opportunity with the 49ers. I hope he gets that opportunity next year. That being said, I agree. I, as a 49ers fan, hope they go after a QB in this years or next years draft. There are so few QBs who can come in as a first or even second year guy and lead their team to success. Nobody doubts Troy's ability as a leader. I think it would be good for a young, talented QB to sit behind and learn from Troy for a few good years, a la Aaron Rodger.

Sounds like a timing issue rather than accuracy.

Absofuckinglutely.

I've watched every play since he started this season. He has missed on the crossing routes more than anything. Thats timing and some miscommunication where the reciever reads the zone and Troy has to read the same route. Just needs time. You dont have to be an "Elite" QB to get to the Super Bowl, just a game manager. Troy has that part down.

The 49ers have some of the best offensive talent in the entire league. They need Oline help, a pass rusher on defense. A lockdown corner and safety wouldnt hurt. After that its time playing together to know how each piece fits.

The 49ers lost games early this season with turnovers by Alex Smith and the defense blowing games late. The TB loss was Oline getting abused, not enough faith in Troy to open the playbook and the secondary getting torched. Those games happen. 3-1 is what I'm looking at. Thats Troy's record as an NFL starter. He deserves the benefit of the doubt for the remainder of the season.
