QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

in a related story robert baker has been killed by a deranged fan. while his identity has not been released, we have learned he is a long time tOSU fan. we have also learned from sources in the columbus police dept. that he targeted mr. baker after learning of his financial contributions to football player troy smith. which caused smith to become ineligable for the upcoming alamo bowl. the family of baker is currently sueing mr. webster for an undisclosed sum that we gather to be above 100 million in a wrongful death claim. while criminal charges are not likely to be forthcoming, it is likely that mr. webster will be convicted on the charge of wrongful death.

*cut to scene of mrs. baker and children crying blaming webster for his death*

I'm guessing we'll see more than a one-game suspension on Smith. One of our BP members PMed me with this:

From Reinstatement Guidelines:

"Withholding the student-athlete from the same number of contests/practice activities the student-athlete participated in while ineligible."

"Student-athlete knew or should have known that his or her actions were a violation (e.g. telephone abuse, book fraud)."

Smith admitted that he knew what he did was wrong.

If Smith did take the benefits prior to the season, then all the fall practices he took part in would be covered by this requirement, so he'll have to misss the entire fall practice. Also, Smith participated in eight games this season (Cincinnati, Marshall, Iowa, Indiana, Penn State, Michigan State, Purdue, and Michigan). We just have to hope that the NCAA doesn't make us forfeit these games.

I agree with DA for the most part. Troy has been in trouble twice while at OSU, both causing him to miss games due to suspension. Say what you will about the people that offer players gifts, but the players have to be smart enough not to take them. I personally think it would set a good example for the team to punish the "starting QB" for breaking the rules. 80 some other players can follow the rules why can't Troy?

I hope Zwick goes out and has a great game tomorrow so that everyone will drop the Troy played great against SCum argument. That was one game, which SCum didn't look ready for. Troy came through and had the game of his life, but that is the only game that he played great in. He looked bad against Iowa and didn't do much against PSU and Purdue. He needs to play like he did against SCum a couple games in a row to prove that he is that good. My question is what does Zwick need to do tomorrow to win back the job?

I think what Zwick needs to do is distribute the ball to his playmakers and not thow picks. That's about it.

Zwick has all the ability, no question. I have always liked the mobility Smith brings to the QB position, but Zwick isn't a bad second choice. Hell, most people were thrilled with his LOI and his 1st start and so on. I expect Zwick to be just fine.

Zwick to Ginn
Zwick to Gonzalez
Zwick to Holmes

It would be nice to see 300 passing. Don't know if that's realistic, but it would be nice.

Zwick has done it before.. and given all the comments (I haven't seen them so I can't claim it) about percieved weaknesses of Ok State's DBs, if Zwick starts off with confidence and thorws the ball without worring about throwing a pick, this could happen..

I just can't wait till tomorrow night!!!

i don't know....i'm pretty worried about the game.....this TS news is about the last thing we needed to happen....i just don't have faith in JZ...atleast not w/the playcalling that's been backing him up. we need something drastically different this time around...not just opening it up and being less conservative....but some shrewd aggressive, yet conservative passing schemes...and the running game has to come to play...go bucks!

This is Zwick's first game at OSU where he hasn't had to worry about getting benched for making a mistake. I'm hoping the team comes together to prove that they are all better now than when Zwick last started. If the play calling is good OK State won't know what hit them.

Actually, here's an interesting question I hadn't really considered until now. Would you rather:

1) An untimely phone call last week causes Smith be suspended for a game now and miss the Alamo Bowl
2) He is suspended for the first game of next season instead

While I was worried that perhaps Smith might have lost his shot at the starting spot, i think being suspended now definitely helps his case more than option #2. Now it obviously would have been best had it occured during this season's first game (which it oculd have had we known sooner) while he was sitting out, but anyway.

Just wondered what you guys thought about that opinion. Sorry if it's already been posted and I missed it.

You're suggesting that the penalty is one game, just whether or not it is favorable to be now, at the end of one season, or at the beginning of the next, correct?

IF the penalty is only one game (I believe it will be much more severe), I would prefer it be now. Get it out of the way and go into next season with a (sort of) clean slate.
