QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Lets not crown him after 2 games. I'm thrilled to see him doing well, but 28 other teams were unsure of him too...

Not ready to name him MVP or induct him into Canton. But he is a quality NFL starter, not a career backup. He was Zwick's backup too, until he got a shot.

He's been passed on because of his height. Some people, prove measurements aren't everything.

I'd be pleased if he has as good a career as Doug Flutie. It may be because I am a Bengals fan, but Troy Smith has always reminded me of Jeff Blake. So that's about the sort of career I've always envisioned for him if he ever got the chance like Blake did. Of course that's not gonna stop me from hoping he goes ahead and makes everyone in San Francisco forget about Joe Montana and Steve Young .

In 4 career games as an NFL starter, he is 3-1 with a passer rating of 98.0 and has quarterbacked 2 game-winning scoring drives.

Would Troy be better if he were 6' 5"? Maybe. He definitely would have been drafted higher and paid more.

It's okay. He will prove himself again.

Sounds like their division is weak and he has a fair chance of getting the Niners to the playoffs. That would be sweet.

Great to see this happening for Troy.

Just a little reminder of some recent comments about Troy's potential and him signing with the 9ers.

Eh. I've always been a huge supporter of Troy, and thought he could be a good NFL QB. Feel like my quote is taken the wrong way here, especially when going back and reading a lot of my posts.

Troy is an absolute gamer, and has always looked good in pre-season games. His practices leave a lot to be desired b/c his game is built on making magical things happen. The guy is a magician in the pocket and with the ball. He just handles it in a way no other player really does...that's how he compensates for his height and poor offensive line play.

My comment in regards to Nate Davis were just what I stated. Nate Davis looked great in the pre-season. My statement was made before I learned Nate Davis is dyslexic and is having a horrible time trying to learn an NFL play-book. If not for that issue, Nate Davis is likely seeing his opportunity right now. Not a knock on Troy at all b/c his original opportunity was ripped away by a rare case of tonsilitis. These things happen.

I love Troy's game and always have. I loved what he showed in Baltimore when given a chance. He moved in the pocket well and hit his receivers in the hands on a regular basis. His numbers always looked very average due to awful receivers and poor OL play. His OL play in San Fran has been pretty bad, but his receivers are good and Frank Gore plays his ass off. It's been good enough to let Troy work his magic in the pocket and make plays.

It's been awesome to watch. I've made the effort to watch every minute of Troy's last two games.

Now just get Teddy on the same page so we can see a big-time deep threat. Still think Ginn is a sleeping giant in the league...

Lol whatever. 30 teams passed on Tom Brady too, what's your point? Troy is a baller, he is a leader, and deserves to start next week.
Lol whatever, indeed. All I was saying is that two games probably isn't a big enough sample size to go digging up old posts and calling people out on their opinions. I had my doubts, I'm beginning to come around a little, but I'm still not 100% sold. Maybe it's still some lingering disappointment from Glendale. I hope he continues to excel. I'd love to be wrong, but digging posts up after two games is a little silly to me. If he were to struggle after today, I wouldn't go back and find all the posts that disagreed with my opinion. And I certainly agree he deserves to start.

I wouldn't hang my hat on the wisdom of NFL front offices. Teams weren't exactly tripping over themselves to swindle Denver out of Hillis, and I am sure that any of those 28 teams would have drafted Alex Smith or David Carr with their top pick if originally given the chance.

Heck, if Cleveland had waived Brady Quinn, I'll bet he'd have been picked up before Troy. So much for the "unsure" theory.

There are always diamonds in the rough.

I'm really, really happy that Troy is doing this well and I'm really glad he got a shot. Especially considering I'm a 49ers fan. But I think it's pretty dumb to point and laugh at those who trusted NFL coaches and GMs over people on a message board.

(People on a message board is not intended to be an insult. :p)

Exactly. Troy is obviously not a sure thing, but the fact that he was taken in the 5th round and then released doesn't mean he can't play. Last year's Super Bowl winning QB was a free agent at one point. There are plenty of other good/great QB's who were either undrafted/ underdrafted/ traded etc. Troy reminds me a little of Jeff Garcia...not great on paper but just finds a way to make plays and win.

One reason QBs are so hard to evaluate is b/c each player on each team is a different fit. Troy is a good fit on this 9ers team b/c there's no real offensive system and Singletary likes guys who show moxie (tm McGloin) So a guy who just goes out and there and plays football and can rally guys emotionally is good here.

One bad thing for Troy, though, is that Singletary is in all likelihood won't be here next year. The new coach is probably going to want something different.
