Loose ends

Tressel doesn’t expect to leave any player at home, at least because of being academically ineligible. "We get our grades (from fall quarter today), but I got a little hint that we’re in pretty good shape," Tressel said. The Buckeyes recently had a Big Ten-high 22 players named to the Academic All-Big Ten team. . . . Junior defensive end Redgie Arden has been on the mend from both the beating he took on the streets of Huntington, W.Va., in late summer and from a scheduled shoulder surgery he underwent a few weeks later. "He’ll be ready in the spring," said Tressel, indicating Arden still has a home with the Buckeyes. . . . One highly regarded Ohio recruit, running back Javon Ringer of Dayton Chaminade-Julienne, committed to Michigan State. Despite being rated 13 th overall in the state by the Ohio Football Recruiting News, Ringer had not been offered a scholarship by OSU reportedly because of some academic concerns, even though he is expected to meet NCAA academic requirements.

from the dispatch last wednesday.

This sucks. I was really looking forward to seeing if the offense would continue under Smith to play like they did against Michigan. Regardless, the good news is he hasn't been kicked off the team, just suspended. If he was done with the Buckeyes, I'd about cry. This really, really sucks, though.

I'm a believer that the punishment should fit the crime/infraction... not a believer in one-size fits all... will be interesting to see what the infraction was.. happy for Justin... but this is a big miss in Troy's life... and his running would have been very important since Ok St can be run on...

Well, this is the biggest opportunity that Justin will ever have to prove he still can be the QB at tOSU. If he plays well at the Alamo Bowl the QB picture will be just as muddy as last year going into the Spring game (assuming that this is just a one game infraction).

Good luck to Zwick, "opportunities" like this are once in a lifetime.

I'm I correct in my belief that Smith wasn't the starter at the beginning of the season?

How has Zwick done when he played?

You hate to see something like this. I hope it isn't too serious.
you can pretty much guess from all our reactions that zwick sucked it up in his starts. :(

Smith Suspended For Bowl Game
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BuckeyeSports.com Staff Reports

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has suspended quarterback Troy Smith for the MasterCard Alamo Bowl for violating team and NCAA rules and standards.

"All of our players, including Troy, know they have a number of responsibilities to fulfill in order to have the privilege of playing at Ohio State," said Tressel. "Troy has not fulfilled those responsibilities and therefore will not be able to play in the Alamo Bowl."

The Buckeyes play Oklahoma State on Dec. 29 in the Alamodome.

Ohio State's Director of Athletics Andy Geiger said the university has petitioned the NCAA for Smith's reinstatement for the 2005 season.

Smith, who started the last five games of the regular season and directed the Buckeyes to a 4-1 record in that span, will not travel with the team to San Antonio on Dec. 22.

"I am aware of what is expected, both on and off the field, at Ohio State and I have fallen short of those expectations," said Smith. "I accept this penalty, wish my teammates the very best in the bowl game, and look forward to the beginning of Winter Quarter."

Smith played in eight of the Buckeyes' 11 games this year and completed 68 of 122 passes for 896 yards and eight touchdowns. He was intercepted three times. He also rushed for 339 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 82 carries.

The 6-1 junior broke into the starting lineup in week seven as a replacement for injured starter Justin Zwick. In the last five games, Smith completed 58 of 107 passes for 791 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 325 yards and two scores. He amassed 386 yards in total offense (241 passing and 145 rushing) in a 37-21 win over Michigan in the season finale, turning in the third highest single-game performance in Ohio State history.

Zwick is expected to start for the Buckeyes in the Alamo Bowl. Tressel will comment to the media at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. We will have his comments posted shortly thereafter.

You are correct. Zwick showed signs of greatness...and signs of ineptitude. A shoulder injury that he played through may have had something to do with it along with horrid O-line play early, but Smith provided a serious spark and took great strides as a starter.

Honestly, your guess is as good as ours when it comes to Zwick in this game.

his 2nd time. Not to good for a team leader and even worse,ZWICK gets another try as a starter. I'm putting alot of money on Oksu

The best QB on the team is Boeckman so I hope he gets a chance if though he's redshirting this year

Zwick reminds me of T . Bolyard(sp) from the same home town orrville ohio before zwicks family moved to massillon. He was suppose to be the best qb to go to osu since A.schlegambler and he sucked then, it was zwicks turn and all the same stories that Bolyard had.
