I am not so certain that I agree with the release of Nate Davis. He looked very good in the preseason. My initial reaction is that they should have cut Alex Smith...but that just wasn't going to happen. I have very little faith in A. Smith, but a lot of fellow fans have argued that he has struggled so much b/c of the offensive coordinator carousel that he has experienced. That argument loses merit after this season, maybe sooner.
I think David Carr is damaged goods. I think that the position that he was placed in with the Texans basically sealed his fate. He took a beating as a quarterback for that team....the effects, both mentally and physically, are still with him. Carr was sacked 76 times in his first year with the Texans and 68 times in 2005....that is just nuts. He, too, may have been a better candidate to cut than Nate Davis. However, he has the most experience which is a great thing to have in a backup QB.
Troy Smith moved into a familiar neighborhood. His locker is right next to his old Ohio State teammate, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (Smith and Ginn are godparents for the each other's children.)
Troy Smith said it was nice to see Ginn, as well as another ex-Buckeye, tackle Alex Boone, but stressed that he has more important things to do than reminisce.
"This offense is not something you can just learn in a couple of days," Troy Smith said. "I've still got to keep my head down. I've got to study like crazy, and, hopefully, some things will happen."
Q: You talked about this on the radio, but can you go through the reasoning of releasing Nate Davis and signing Troy Smith?
-SINGLETARY: It?s fairly simple. I think right now if we had to go into a game with Nate Davis right now, it would be a difficult situation for us. It would be tough.
We do have David Carr, but I wanted the guy, the third quarterback, I really wanted him to be able to compete with the No. 2. And right now, that?s not the case.
Hopefully, we?re able to keep Nate Davis. And he would be our practice-squad quarterback. But if it doesn?t work out, I feel that it was a risk that it was worth taking to get the player we did. So that?s why.
-Q: With the limited number of reps that a No. 2 QB gets?
-SINGLETARY: You know what? Let me say this, OK? I?m not going to talk about the quarterbacks any more. That?s a dead deal, OK?
Alex Smith is our starting quarterback. David Carr is our No. 2. Whoever the No. 3 is, he has to compete with No. 2. That?s it.
You?re right, it?s a limited amount of reps. Especially right now that the season is going to start. It would?ve been better in training camp. But due to the situation that came up with Nate Davis not totally being prepared mentally, it didn?t happen.
So I?m hopeful that we get to keep him. If we don?t, we don?t.
-Q: About the No. 2, you did say you wanted Troy Smith to compete with Carr. Can he do that when neither guy is getting a whole lot of reps?
-SINGLETARY: I just think as a staff you continue to look at it in the limited amount of reps that they get, what do they do at that time? Can they recall things? They have to work mentally without getting those reps. Like Alex did last year, when he wasn?t getting the reps. I?m not sure that he got one rep before he had a chance to play. He came in and he played well. That?s what the 2 has to do.

As for Smith...With the recent media out about statues being built of recent players like Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford, as well as retired numbers of Matt Leinart and Bush (pre scandal) - when are we going to retire Smiths number? The kid was one of the best leaders in OSU history, fufills every criteria more more:

- Graduated from OSU - Check
- Won the Heisman - Check
- Won the Walter Camp - Check
- AP POY - Check
