QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

They're definitely thinking what Tanner said, but it's still stupid. Curious what the other two 49er fans I know think about it.

I, as a niner fan, am incredibly happy about the Troy Smith signing. This is something that I have been hoping for for a while now....since Flacco was given the starting job despite Troy's recovery from his illness.

I am not so certain that I agree with the release of Nate Davis. He looked very good in the preseason. My initial reaction is that they should have cut Alex Smith...but that just wasn't going to happen. I have very little faith in A. Smith, but a lot of fellow fans have argued that he has struggled so much b/c of the offensive coordinator carousel that he has experienced. That argument loses merit after this season, maybe sooner.

I think David Carr is damaged goods. I think that the position that he was placed in with the Texans basically sealed his fate. He took a beating as a quarterback for that team....the effects, both mentally and physically, are still with him. Carr was sacked 76 times in his first year with the Texans and 68 times in 2005....that is just nuts. He, too, may have been a better candidate to cut than Nate Davis. However, he has the most experience which is a great thing to have in a backup QB.

Without trying to get into the dyslexia thing, for whatever reason Davis, by his own admission, only has command of about 75% of the playbook. He was drafted almost 18 months ago. That is not going to cut it.

Carr is obviously not very exciting, but I think he was their best option as a backup.

Either way, pretty good offseason for the 9ers. Add a couple of 1st round beasts on the O-Line, some athleticism in the secondary in Mays, a guy who looks like he can play in Bowman, and getting the ol' band back together by adding Smith and Ginn and Boone making the team.

"Reunited, and it feels so good....."

Ted Ginn probably passed out with joy when he heard Troy was coming West. Best thing that could have happened to Ted. Another chance anywhere was the best thing that could have happened to Troy. Could be big things in a Niner uniform soon.

I've hated the 49ers for so long being a Dolphin fan, I'm finding it very difficult to feel any excitement here. :(

Nate Davis was signed to the practice squad, so I guess we're all happy now. :tongue2:

Not implying that I'd rather have Davis than Smith. Just in case someone comes in here and sees that and assumes I'm hating.

Troy Smith moved into a familiar neighborhood. His locker is right next to his old Ohio State teammate, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (Smith and Ginn are godparents for the each other's children.)

Troy Smith said it was nice to see Ginn, as well as another ex-Buckeye, tackle Alex Boone, but stressed that he has more important things to do than reminisce.

"This offense is not something you can just learn in a couple of days," Troy Smith said. "I've still got to keep my head down. I've got to study like crazy, and, hopefully, some things will happen."

49ers notebook: San Francisco has a new captain, Alex Smith - San Jose Mercury News
Q: You talked about this on the radio, but can you go through the reasoning of releasing Nate Davis and signing Troy Smith?

-SINGLETARY: It?s fairly simple. I think right now if we had to go into a game with Nate Davis right now, it would be a difficult situation for us. It would be tough.

We do have David Carr, but I wanted the guy, the third quarterback, I really wanted him to be able to compete with the No. 2. And right now, that?s not the case.

Hopefully, we?re able to keep Nate Davis. And he would be our practice-squad quarterback. But if it doesn?t work out, I feel that it was a risk that it was worth taking to get the player we did. So that?s why.

-Q: With the limited number of reps that a No. 2 QB gets?

-SINGLETARY: You know what? Let me say this, OK? I?m not going to talk about the quarterbacks any more. That?s a dead deal, OK?

Alex Smith is our starting quarterback. David Carr is our No. 2. Whoever the No. 3 is, he has to compete with No. 2. That?s it.

You?re right, it?s a limited amount of reps. Especially right now that the season is going to start. It would?ve been better in training camp. But due to the situation that came up with Nate Davis not totally being prepared mentally, it didn?t happen.

So I?m hopeful that we get to keep him. If we don?t, we don?t.

-Q: About the No. 2, you did say you wanted Troy Smith to compete with Carr. Can he do that when neither guy is getting a whole lot of reps?

-SINGLETARY: I just think as a staff you continue to look at it in the limited amount of reps that they get, what do they do at that time? Can they recall things? They have to work mentally without getting those reps. Like Alex did last year, when he wasn?t getting the reps. I?m not sure that he got one rep before he had a chance to play. He came in and he played well. That?s what the 2 has to do.

A couple more of those POS games, and Troy might get his shot sooner than later. Alex Smith has proven over and over again that he is a [censored]ing terrible QB.

Alex Smith is in the same boat as Matt Leinart. They both put up great numbers, drafted high and then fell flat on their face in towns that aren't high profile cities. The best Smith can hope for is a trade and one more shot.

As for Smith...With the recent media out about statues being built of recent players like Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford, as well as retired numbers of Matt Leinart and Bush (pre scandal) - when are we going to retire Smiths number? The kid was one of the best leaders in OSU history, fufills every criteria more more:

- Graduated from OSU - Check
- Won the Heisman - Check
- Won the Walter Camp - Check
- AP POY - Check

It takes time. I'm sure it will be discussed when he goes into the Ohio State HOF

Smith isn't THAT bad. But I agree with everything else. He shouldn't be a starter. He'd be a very good backup, though.

Wouldn't expect the 49ers offense to repeat the performance they had this weekend though. I'd almost bet on there being a QB competition next year and I'd have to give Troy the edge.. I see Singletary being a huge fan of him.

Flacco QB rating: 23.8
4 INTs

Ravens deserve the QB they asked for.

It would warm my heart to see the Ravens get horrible QB play all season and for it to cost them a spot in the playoffs. The way they kicked Troy Smith to the curb was shameful. The man finishes his rookie year by starting a couple games and actually leading the team to some scores and showing some leadership. Then he gets sick and never gets his job back.

The Ravens players knew it was a mistake to crap on Troy Smith the way they did....that's why there was a little tension in the locker room. That "little" tension is going to escalate when the losses start piling up.
