QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

From the Baltimore Sun via Fantasy Football Mastermind quickbits:

FFMastermind.com: NFL Quick Bits

..."HC John Harbaugh was complimentary of Troy Smith, who's competing with QB Kyle Boller and rookie QB Joe Flacco for the starting job. 'You can see he can play quarterback in the NFL without question.' he said. 'He's got the arm strength. He can move around and operate the offense. Now under pressure, proving himself in games, that's going to be up to him, but he's got the ability to be a starting quarterback in this league.'"

Taking off the scarlet-colored glasses...

The Ravens would have been stupid not to draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round.

They had 2 QBs, one was a proven non-starter and the other shows great potential but is still unknown. Even if Troy pans out, he needs a backup and they would not be keeping Boller much longer in that situation.

Cause first round picks are where back-up QBs should be taken?

That's why they took one, but no QB is going to be successful with a struggling offensive line and an aging defense. This draft had plenty of depth at the offensive line.

They do not know enough about Troy to know if he is going to be a starter for the seasons to come or a backup. (we might claim to know he will do great, but the fact that every NFL exec let him sink to the end of the 5th round should tell you that it is by no means a sure-shot).

Lets just say, for the sake of argument, Troy does not pan out this year. Where are they next year? They would have been forced to draft a QB in the first round and throw him into the fire from day 1. Instead, they drafted a QB who can learn the ropes. The might not need him, but, like I said, Troy's success next season is no sure-thing--no need to risk it all on Troy's arm.

BTW, Aaron Rodgers was a 1st rounder 3 years ago (one example off the top of my head).

Disagree. They seriously fucked up by not loading up on o-linemen and receivers. They had one of the worst drafts on paper. They traded up to get a QB with serious flaws(only threw 23 td's at the 1-aa level, competition, spread offense, weird throwing motion, etc.) when in all likelyhood he would've been there later(reeks of when Kyle Boller drafted). Then they took a small runningback with over 900 career carries in college when they already have McGahee and Ross(another tiny runningback). Then they took Zbikowski who will never amount to anything other than a special teams player. They didn't address the o-line until late in the 3rd round.

The Browns laid out the blueprint for drafting a good offense. They got the pieces in place(Edwards, Winslow, Thomas) and then took their QB of the future. The Ravens can't seem to get it through their heads that a lot of a QB's success depends on how much time he has to throw. If his receivers can't get open and his line can't protect him, it doesn't matter if they have the second coming of John Elway back there.

I love how in that pic Troys eyes are scanning and Boller has his eyes locked on his receiver.

I seem to lack your ability to detect eye movement is still photos. :tongue2:

OCBucksFan must be drinking the new version of Bud Light..."Bud Light is brewed to give you everything you want in a beer. Never ending refreshment. Superior drinkability. And now, the ability to detect eye movement in still photos."

In fact I think I see a commercial here. Cue OCBucksFan freaking out while photographs on the wall follow him around the room and cue the narrator, "The ability to detect eye movement in still photos is no longer available in Bud Light."

I agree that Flacco was a stretch in the 1st, my point is that it is not a stretch for them to use a pick on a QB early (see Jwins post above). They probably should have waited a round. They had to draft a QB no matter what, why not draft one who might be able to start one day if you don't know if Troy will pan out?

I also am not sure I would totally rip on their entire draft. I think the Ravens have earned a reputation for being among the best when it comes to draft day performance. Until that changes, I'd reserve judgment.

Troy will get his shot, that is all that matters.

The Ravens are essentially in rebuildling mode.

Now, when they were successful, they relied upon one of the greatest defenses in NFL history... and most of those guys are past their prime now. So, when you are in a rebuilding mode and you sorely need to rebuild your formerly greatest strength, you take an overrated QB from a 1AA school, and trade to get him in the process?
