Dryden;1141992; said:Yes and no. It's good in that there's one less incumbent blocking his path, but it's bad in that Troy probably wasn't at risk to be cut anyway, Kyle Boller was, so Troy would have moved up to #2 behind McNair while the Ravens found a new #3.
McNair announcing his retirement before the draft just gives the Ravens an incentive to go after Matt Ryan in this years draft, or somebody else in the higher rounds.
To Troy's benefit, it sounds as though he's won over the veteran players, so he's got that going for him. I think he's just in a bad spot with a new coaching staff coming in, and he still hasn't grown 4 more inches, which I hear is really important in NFL player evaluation, as opposed to, you know, actual talent and stuff like that.
Spotlight on Boller, Smith at camp
Both QBs adjusting to Cameron's offense under increased scrutiny

Much of the attention during the second day of the Ravens' first minicamp under new coach John Harbaugh was directed at quarterbacks Kyle Boller and Troy Smith today at the team's complex in Owings Mills.
With 13-year veteran Steve McNair announcing his retirement yesterday, and with NFL draft looming a week from tomorrow, Boller and Smith are for now the only two quarterbacks on the roster.
The pace of new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron's offense, which veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason has called "fast and frustrating," appears to be something both quarterbacks are trying to adjust to, with mixed results.
At one point today, Smith showed some of that frustration when he failed to pick up his intended target in time, slamming the ball to the ground in disgust. At another, Smith threaded a pass to Demetrius Williams.

Battle for Ravens' starting QB spot begins

OWINGS MILLS ? It wasn?t hard to identify the Baltimore Ravens? candidates to replace veteran quarterback Steve McNair one day after his abrupt retirement, especially since Kyle Boller and Troy Smith were sporting bright red jerseys.
That practice uniform modification is just intended to protect their health. No, it wasn?t signifying red-alert status under center in the wake of McNair?s unexpected departure.
As the Ravens try to determine who?s going to be their starter after losing a four-time Pro Bowl selection, they face an uncertain, fluid situation.
The Ravens? primary options are former starter Kyle Boller, former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith or acquiring a blue-chip rookie draft pick such as Boston College?s Matt Ryan, Delaware?s Joe Flacco, Louisville?s Brian Brohm and Michigan?s Chad Henne to insert into the competition.
During his first minicamp, Ravens coach John Harbaugh was complimentary of Boller and Smith?s initial performance. However, he acknowledged that a rookie could also become a new contender.
?It?ll be tough for anybody to come in and win a job against those guys,? Harbaugh said Friday. ?Those two guys are solid quarterbacks and they can both play.
?But whoever we draft is going to be a real good quarterback, too. So, it?s going to be competition. We?re going to roll the balls out and let them fight for the job.?
Smith doesn?t have Boller?s edge of experience, but the 6-foot, 225-pound former Ohio State star does have mobility, a big arm and a trademark swagger.
?At all times, I?m going to be a leader,? Smith said. ?I?m going to control the things that I know how to control and I don?t worry about, ?May the best man win.? I just worry about the things that I can perfect within my day-to-day actions.
?I?m not thinking of being No. 2, being No. 1, being No. 3. I?m just thinking about l learning this offense as much as I can because that?s what it?s about.?

20. Baltimore (in a trade with Tampa Bay). QB Chad Henne, Michigan. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens trade lower in Round 1 and pick up Joe Flacco, the Delaware wunderkind. The organization likes both the more-polished Henne and the kid with the best arm in the draft, Flacco. My gut feeling is that Henne's the pick, in part because he's prepared to play earlier.

this time for the starting position on an NFL team. HA
