QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Written by Mike Preston. That guy is a tool who is laughed at by most Ravens fans.

He is being laughed at by some Buckeye fans now too. Preston may be a relative of May and Alberts.

Congatulations on your first NFL victory Troy. I watched Troy's game against Pitt, and was very happy for him and proud of his poise and control of the offense. Hopefully at the very least that game showcased his skills enough to get him a chance at starting next year. When I see retreads like Boller, Weinke, Dilfer, K and T Collins (although Todd is doing pretty well) getting chance after chance, I certainly hope that Troy will be given a fair shot in Baltimore to win the job from the beginning of camp.

You guys are right he is a class act all the way.

This could be good news for Troy, a new coach may see more important holes to fill on this team and not use an early draft choice on a QB. It also may get rid of the convoluted idea that Kyle Boller can be an NFL QB. New coaches know that they only have 2-4 years to prove themselves and also know a new QB under center means a struggle, so Troy with 1 year and a couple starts at least deserves a chance.

So, does Billick getting canned hurt or help Troy? Good because he will get a chance to play in an offense that doesn't suck ass? Bad because he has to learn a new system in only his second year in the NFL?

I guess a lot of it depends on who they bring in as the new head coach. Hopefully it's someone that continues to (or starts to) develop Troy into the type of QB we all know he can be.

I think Troy getting sat for most part of the season is a very good thing. For one, if you look around the league, rookie QBs tossed right into the thick of thing tend to fail and fail miserably. Troy is the type of player that needs a little time to feel everything out, establish his personality, and then show what he can do on the field. He's better playing with a chip on his shoulder.

I don't see why so many franchises seem to think that drafting a QB early is the best way to go. Those QBs are young, soft, and generally immature. Drafting a QB late, who isn't pampered the whole way, is often times the best way to go. Not everyone is a prodigy, like Peyton Manning or Carson Palmer.

If you establish a running game, create an offensive line, and get some targets, any young QB you take will have an infinitely easier time.

For instance, let us look at the Bengals offensive resurgence:

Carson Palmer was drafted in: 2003
Chad Johnson was drafted in: 2001
Houshmandzadeh was drafted in: 2001
Rudi Johnson was drafted in: 2001

The second draft choice by the Bengals was: Eric Steinbach, Offensive Guard.

How about the Browns?

Players drafted before Brady Quinn or in the same year:
Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards, Joe Thomas, Lawrence Vickers.

Players acquired before Brady Quinn or in the same year:
Jamal Lewis, Joe Jurevicious, Kevin Shaffer, Seth McKinney, LeCharles Bentley, Hank Fraley, Eric Steinbach.

Of course Brady Quinn is going to have an easier time succeeding with a great supporting cast than David Carr or Tim Couch would with nothing.

Point being, Troy Smith has shown promise this year. What would be a better choice: Drafting a QB in the 1st round, and neglecting other weaknesses (Such as depth at WR and offensive line, as well as a few defensive problems), OR drafting offensive line and WR early, and drafting another underrated QB coming out of college (Matt Flynn is projected to be drafted in the 5th round)?

It should be an easy choice.

Agreed though I think it'd be a terrible idea to draft Flynn.
