Calling a life-changing audible

Ravens' Smith hopes youths take his message to heart

Friday, October 26, 2007 Mark Gillispie

Plain Dealer Reporter
It's Thursday afternoon on the edge of downtown Cleveland, and hometown hero Troy Smith tells a group of teenage boys dressed in identical uniforms how much he needs their help.
"I don't know you, but I love you all the same," says Smith, a rookie with the Baltimore Ravens. "I don't come to you as an athlete. I come to you as a man right now. I'm not a football player. I'm a man who happens to play football."
The uniform the boys are wearing are blue jumpsuits stenciled with the initials "CCJDC" - Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center.

CLEVELAND -- Behind heavily secured walls and fences at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center sat ninety young men and boys.
Some of them marked with bracelets, others marked with tattoos. None of them want to be there. Except one.

The one man who chose to be there, also made a conscious choice to make something with his life. He chose to be a Heisman Trophy winning athlete and NFL quarterback.

Troy Smith spent his bye-week from the Baltimore Ravens here in his hometown of Cleveland, talking with groups of kids in schools, and a group of locked-up juveniles.

"I am no different from you," Smith told them. "No different at all. As soon as you decide you want to change, the sky is the limit man."

I was thinking with the QB troubles at the Ravens he might see some playing time...

I doubt they will play him this year, though next year he may move into the #2 spot unless the Ravens draft a QB. Personally, I think he would add a lot to their offense, he can move, he doesn't make a lot of mistakes and the kid is a flat-out winner.

Ive been waiting and looking for updates on his progress of learning the offense and havent seen a thing. There is a lot of speculation on the Ravens official forum but no real news.

Anyway there is speculation that Billick's job is in crisis so he may get a little more experimental.

I think they just re-signed Boller, so that doesn't help Troy. The Ravens will also have a decent pick in the upcoming draft. The draft looks like it'll be fairly deep with QBs. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens drafted a QB. Although, Ogden is getting old and their line has looked weak from what I've seen.

What is the speculation about Troy on the Ravens' forums? I'd love to see him get a shot, it's not like he wasn't playing behind NFL-sized linemen at OSU anyways. He'll give them an extra running option and a good, accurate arm.

Baltimore has a fairly difficult schedule remaining (Cle, SD, NE, Indy, Mia, Sea, Pitt). I doubt they'd throw him into that.
