NEW YORK (AP) -- For Ohio State and Troy Smith, it's been that kind of year.
The Buckeyes were No. 1 from start to finish and their star quarterback had no real challenger in winning the Heisman Trophy.
Smith was a runaway winner Saturday night as the best player in college football, just two years after nearly derailing his career by taking money from a booster.

The senior quarterback moved to the front of the Heisman race in September with a flawless performance against Texas and finished off a perfect regular season by throwing four touchdown passes against Michigan.

Now, there's only one thing left for Smith to do: Beat Florida for the national championship on Jan. 8.

"Normally, I'm pretty cool in pressure situations, but my heart is pounding really fast now," Smith said.

"I'm at a loss for words. I just can't believe this is happening. ... It means everything. Just to be here in this situation. I love everybody back home in Columbus."

Like so many of the victories Smith has led the Buckeyes to this season, the Heisman win was a rout.

He received 801 first-place votes, the second most ever, and 1,662 points more than second-place finisher Darren McFadden of Arkansas, making it the second-most lopsided Heisman vote. Only O.J. Simpson's 1,750-point victory in 1968 was more onesided.

Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn was third and West Virginia running back Steve Slaton was fourth.

2006 Heisman Voting
Player................School........1st...2nd....3rd....Total
Troy Smith..........Ohio State....801....62......13.....2540
Darren McFadden..Arkansas.......45....298...147......878
Brady Quinn.........Notre Dame....13....276...191......782

The Browns would take Joe Thomas in a heartbeat if available. OL, CB, DE are all bigger needs than QB. I'd love to see them take a flier on Troy in the early 2nd though (I can dream).

Kiper was on today. He said he thinks Troy will go in the late first or 2nd round. He said the pros think he is too short. Kiper also said he will be the second QB taken.

Not if Brohm declares early.

Big congrats to Troy.

Many times, with players of Troy's stature, we do not realize how much of a legend in their day they are until we're 10-20 years down the road looking back. I don't think we'll fully see Troy's greatness for at least a few years. It's easy to get lost in the moment. Enjoy it...every season is a new beginning! Now let's beat UF and chalk up one last accomplishment for JT, TS & the rest of the team.

If he goes in the first round I can see the Eagles picking him before the Panthers. The Eagles Know that Mcnabb is on his last leg and and rarely stays healthy for 16 games. (Or even 10!) I'd think Andy Reid would be in love with Smith as he could be very effective in a westcoast offense.

I can honestly see Troy slip to the second round. The NFL teams, GM's, scouts, etc, are so caught up in numbers and stats that they may frown on his size and pass him by....ie, Chris Spielman
I have this feeling that I just can't shake though. I know this probably won't happen and I really do believe he will be drafted in the 2nd round, but for some reason I have this picture in my mind of The Patriots grabbing him in the 1st round with pick 28 to 32. They could groom him for two or three years and by that time Brady will be about the average Qb retirement age.
