QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I agree it's too early to call Troy Smith a Heisman candidate. I think the reason Ginn fell off the radar had to do with the entire offense including play calling and execution as much as it did with him.
It had more to do with him muffing punts, dropping passes, and curling up in a ball everytime he got the football.
Everyone's expectations for him coming into this season were extremely high, especially in the media. And, IMO, it may have gotten to him.

come on man, is everything negative today? Did teddy struggle early to find any sort of game? Yeah he did. He then ran back four returns, and stepped up his game a lot over the course of the season. He's still struggling with fielding punts, but you must have been watching a different michigan game to continue with the rest of the negativity. I seem to remember a one handed catch by teddy, as well as a full speed 180 spin catch for a first down.

You do realize we just beat down michigan, and are on the verge of putting ND in their place, right? There are always things to be fixed, and teddy's punt fielding is a big one. But to say he is curling into a ball, that's remarkably harsh for a guy who was our leading WR vs. UM.

He is always trying to hit homeruns every time he touches the ball. that is probably why he runs before he has the ball secured. This is a product of his homerun mentality, not him buying into the hype that he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Troy used to be very similar, and tried to make the big play immediately. that wasn't due to hype either, it was just the wrong approach to try and do everything on one single play.

Yeah, he struggled in the beginning, which is what I was talking about. If I do recall, he wasn't a huge part of our offense in the beginning of the 04 season either. I just think that pre-Michigan State, his mind seemed to be somewhere else, which may have been because all of the media hype.

you should have stopped at the first half, which was accurate (he did struggle a lot earlier this year).

You do realize Teddy Ginn was the nation's best DEFENSIVE BACK, right? So the pressure you claim got to him was about his remarkable cover skills and closing speed. He arrived in columbus ready to play DB (which he trained for per OSU's request). Then they switched him to WR.

His hype was on defense, not on offense. If there was thing he was known for, it was dangerous open field returns (ST & INT). He did that in the wisky game, which was pretty early in the season for a true frosh to make a huge impact.

I can't think of too many true frosh that were consistent stars within a month or two of getting to school. #13 is one of the few, and he enrolled early, which teddy did not.

You do realize teddy had to assimilate the entire playbook in a month or so, while the other WRs had a year in the system... right? There is such a thing as maturing as a player, not to mention at a position you were not prepared to play.
I know he was a DB. I was talking about hype coming into this season, not coming out of highschool. As everyone knows he was on quite a few Heisman lists because of his play as a WR, KR, and PR. Which, like I said before, may have been on his mind. Dropping passes and muffing punts has alot to do with lack of concentration and focus.

my bad  I read "not a big part of 04, didn't do anything before MSU game, probably due to hype" (which due to the similar breakout game in 04, led me to the wrong conclusion)

I shall now fall on my own sword, either that or head to bed.
