QB Tavien St. Clair (Official Thread)

Love TSC, but expectations for 18 year old QBs are way too high. If he was playing at IMG, that's one thing, but going from D3 to Ohio State is going to take time...mentally, and physically. I hope he gets the time he needs to just sit, watch, and learn. If he can get some snaps against Grambling late in the 4th, great, soak it up, but I don't think this is going to be any kind of competition, nor should we put that kind of pressure on him either.
This ^ and I am the biggest TSC fan there is. The speed of the college game vs D3 football is going to take time to adjust to, along with learning the and refining his technique with Kelly/Day. That will take time and Sayin is going to be further along in all those categories and likely by a significant bit. Definitely a learning year and I could see him pushing for the backup though.

College football rankings: Every top-25 team's highest-rated newcomer from recruiting trail, transfer portal

These roster additions will define the 2025 college football season

3. Ohio State Buckeyes: QB Tavien St. Clair (100) — The embarrassment of riches in the Ohio State quarterback room continues. St. Clair joined the in-state program as the No. 4 overall player and No. 3 quarterback in the 2025 cycle. A redshirt season appears likely, though, as he waits his turn behind projected starter Julian Sayin.

Just sayin': A player they project to be redshirted doesn't seem like a good choice to "highest rated newcomer to define the 2025 season".

Tavien St. Clair Says Ohio State is “Everything I Thought It Would Be” As Five-Star Quarterback Focuses on Improvement As Freshman

Tavien St. Clair has dreamed of playing for Ohio State since he was a young child. As he took his first snap behind Ohio State’s offensive line at Monday’s first practice of the spring on Monday, he realized that dream had come true.

“I think the first time that I had taken a snap with my offense on the field, my group of offense on the field, it was like, ‘This is actually happening now, and it's not just a dream that I'm trying to make happen. It was a dream that I'm living now,’” the freshman quarterback said Wednesday.
So far, that dream is living up to St. Clair’s expectations.

“It's been everything I thought it would be coming to Ohio State,” St. Clair said. “I've had plenty of meetings with quarterback coaches, I've had great counsel and great leadership from the older guys in the room, and just other players on the team as well, just getting wisdom from them. It's been great, learning the culture and really trying to just enhance myself in it and just be a great part of this team and really just showcase what this team is all about.

“And so I just take every opportunity I can,” St. Clair said later. “I'm blessed to be here. I love it here. I wouldn't change it for the world.”

I agree. Beside Just and Dakota, who do they have? TSC will be #3 unless they sign a transfer.

Just sayin': I think that they will need to get a transfer too. Three QBs just isn't enough. If there is a guy like Gunner Hoak was back in 2019 in today's transfer portial they need to grab him.

No doubt in my mind that Day finds a grad transfer depth type after spring ball.

There is just no way you can roll with only 3.

Not only can they not only have 3 QBs, in no way can they rely on a true frosh. Idc how highly rated, TSC is not close to being able to read college defenses. His HS rating is based off of camps, projected ceiling and physical attributes that can't be coached. He and his HS coaches have even admitted that he has a lot to learn in how to read defenses, and learning more complicated offenses. He'll get there eventually, but getting a solid backup in the Portal will be a necessity.

This is accurate as can be. TSC and his coaches (as you said) understand he will have a learning curve coming in. The immense talent, mental capacity and drive is there to make that happen quickly...but not Day 1. We absolutely need a portal guy as a backup to Sayin and Kienholz. Putting TSC into meaningful playing time this year would not be good for him or the team imo. He's going to be a monster but just needs to develop like most true frosh guys do.

He could thrive in the moment if needed, but you want that to be the last option if possible for next season unless he picks up everything quicker than most. TSC is going to be a star here, but will benefit from development before his number is called.
