QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

I think all the talk from Tate before the Fields transfer was official was to try to prevent him from doing so. It didn't work and I think he's sees the writing on the wall. Also, let's not forget there were already rumors of him transferring in previous years and committed to 2 school prior to OSU. I wish it wasn't the case because I think he's going to be a stud wherever he goes but I think the odds of it being at OSU are slim.

Here is what I see. A QB is the team leader. Leaders put the team before themselves. I don't fault him and I think the argument that the offense is going to value a different skill set is valid. He is too much of a talent to be a benchwarmer. While these things can be acknowledged, his response to Fields was not consistent with leadership. Frustration, disappointment, a naive attempt to exert pressure on the coaches, youth...these things may explain his reactions and all are understandable. However, Martell has communicated fear, not leadership. He has communicated that it is all about him, not the team. He has every right to do that, but I hope that he realizes that such attitudes and behaviors disqualify him from leadership.

By entering that portal, Martell told his coaches and entire team that it's his way or he will not be the QB next year. When he took this step, he ensured that it will not be his way. I have not seen any evidence that this kid is the promised one, but I really hoped he might be until his current behavior. Now, if he leaves, I can only wish him the best.

Tate brought it on himself with his comments to be honest. Him transferring before Fields is even cleared by the NCAA isn't a good look after all the Twitter talk and talk about competing for the spot.
Just a point of order... Tate has not transferred yet. There's no guarantee he will transfer prior to any resolution on Fields' eligibility waiver.

I don't think Tate was just trying to scare away the competition. I believe he meant what he said about expecting to win the job, but his tweet mentioned returning the zone read to the playbook. If Day has informed Tate that the zone read will not be a staple in the offense then that would clearly change the calculus.
