QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

other players are already clowning on him for it...

I agree explore your options, I wish for his sake given the current environment it could have been in private but that doesn’t get the NCAA any extra publicity
link?

My first thought when this surfaced was that if Fields keeps his head down and works for that job, this makes for a much smoother transition.

Baldwin received rave reviews during bowl practice and articles were written about him pushing Martell even before Fields entered the picture, right?

For sure. I’d just be “worried” banking on a kid coming off a serious injury, with zero experience. Granted Fields doesn’t have a ton of experience, but I’ll take some over none lol.

So what happened to competing for the job that he was getting all hyped about on twitter?

I don’t believe anything happened to it. Entering the portal does not mean a player is 100% transferring but anybody, no matter the situation, is smart to keep all options open. Unless Day whispered to him that he is the starter, competing for the job leaves a possibility that he loses said competition.

I don't think this is complicated.

Tate really wanted the Ohio State job. He got "recruited" over. He tried to scare Fields away, it didn't work. Fields and his family knew exactly what the circumstances were in coming to Columbus. Tate understands now as well and is pursuing his right to transfer....and likely as a graduate transfer, which again, he should be commended for. He was really smart to graduate early to give him the ability to make this decision should he need to. Now he does.....

This is the smartest move for him. While I believe he’s a talented kid, once Meyer retired this was inevitable, and Fields transferring made it a reality. Our offense has shifted away from his skill set. He is not a Pro-style QB. As long as Fields is eligible, Martell was not going to start at OSU for another 2 years at least and then he would have to compete with Baldwin (who I think would have beat him out by middle of next season anyways) and Miller.

Let’s face it, his imminent transfer sucks due to the timing (we don’t know if Fields will be eligible) and leaves our QB room bare if he bolts before the situation is figured out. After watching each ones highlights, analyzing their measurables and upsides, taking our new offense and coach into consideration, and taking more knowledgeable people’s word for it, I’m definitely happy with taking Fields and losing Martell. This is a business and we are in it to win championships. Clemson and Alabama both made moves like this in the past two seasons and both got a championship out of it.

For one, I think this looks worse on him than us. He did a lot of chirping to not even try to win the competition. Although I can’t blame him for seeing the writing on the wall. Wish him the best of luck. I see him going somewhere in PAC-12 probably UCLA. Just hope he doesn’t end up at the dumpster fire that is Miami.

That may not sound great, but it's not as bad as one would assume.

Martell isn't a client of his, so why would he do anything for him? Likewise, there are ethical issues in soliciting clients, so his saying he has no intention of doing anything keeps the lawyer from running afoul any ethical rules.

Edit: And, as AuTX says - there wouldn't be a need for representation if Tate graduates.
