QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Don't you dare besmirch the Cheeze-It Bowl.

+1

The Cheez-it Bowl was like a great B movie. It was so horribly bad, it was entertaining as hell....in a B movie kind of way.

It is also now the standard by which all other QB incompetence is measured (at least in my mind).

Of all the football games I have seen in my 40 some odd year fan career CIB (Cheez-it Bowl) was one of the more memorable.

That’s exactly the point I’m trying to make. The ifs and buts are all over every argument here and there ain’t nobody here informed enough to level criticism at anyone.

Bad look? Only based on only what you think you know, right?
No, I freely admit I know nothing other than what I have seen happen in the public eye, and it looks like it was probably not handled that well by either party to me. The main reason being that it was in the public eye to begin with. Part of that may be on Tate for his public comments, and part of it may be on the staff for not letting Tate know their intentions earlier (of course, there are valid reasons why they wouldn't). Bottom line is that if this scenario would have played out at another school, people here would probably be laughing about it. So yeah, it is a bad look in my opinion, even if it is fairly minor in the grand scheme of things.

So, your criticism of the program's actions is? That if this was another program we'd be LOLing at them? Because of the transfer of a player? I still fail to follow what action or inaction of the program that you can point to that allows one to level reasonable criticism. Again, we don't know how / when things were handled with Tate. And certainly, a significant change in direction for the team is justifiable reason for a player to transfer. So, of what, specifically, are you critical?

The only bad look here, and I think that you said it yourself... it's not even really that bad of a look, is Tate having to eat a little crow regarding the '19 QB competition. So, as far as I can see, a little maturity from Tate would have gone a long way to prevent that bad look. With maturity and a little experience he'll learn to stop with a response of, "I'm going to do every thing I can to compete at my greatest ability" or something to that effect. Baldwin has shown the ability to do so when queried on the topic, no? This, from my perspective, is entirely on Tate and the only people critical of the program seem to be those who are, based on confirmed facts, least equipped to level such criticism.

Me personally? Were I Ryan Day, I would have weighed the option of dismissing Tate from the program outright based on his sub-tweets. But, as a first year HC of a major program looking at a thin QB room, there's no way he could have done that... and that's just another piece of evidence as to why I am not the head coach. Ultimately, the more I think through the way the player handled himself, the happier I've become with the outcome.

It's a bad look regardless of whose fault it is, and I tend to believe that it is likely both sides could have handled it better. There is no need for me to keep posting why I think that, because you don't seem to agree.

What is the bad look? What specifically are you pointing to and saying, "that looks bad?" We may very well agree, however, your use of vague pronouns "It's a bad look" doesn't help me understand the point you're trying to make? I think that I've asked for the specific's regarding what you're critical of on multiple occasions... and it wasn't rhetorical. I really don't follow what you're pointing at as being "a bad look."

As I clearly said in my previous post, I don't think it is a good look that it played out in public:

OK. I guess you're right, we'll have to disagree that the program did anything publicly to warrant attention beyond the player's actions. I agree, completely, that it would be nice if things like this weren't on full view for the world to see... but I can't point at anyone beyond the player and the media for that.

But to your point regarding it being in the public, it will be interesting to see how Coach Day addresses questions when directly asked. My hope is that he takes the high road and says that he "won't comment on players who are not on his team." I suspect that will be the case given how we've already seen him shut down questions in his tenure. Time will tell.

When someone thinks of a bad look at a school, it's Oklahoma banning Kendall from transferring when Hurts is announced, or OSU seemingly protecting a wife abuser (not talking about what actually happened, rather the appearance from the messaging and reporting), etc.

"It ended poorly" is different than it being a bad look by all parties. From where I'm sitting, Tate was a very public personality that wore his emotions on his sleeve.

Short of forcing him to be quiet or not pursuing a transfer like Fields, I am not sure how the school is involved in it being a look.
