Schoenhoft solidifies QB job

Delaware coach K.C. Keeler said quarterback Robby Schoenhoft surpassed expectations in Saturday's loss at Maryland.
The Ohio State transfer, in his first collegiate start, completed 14 of 22 passes for 128 yards with an interception. He also had five carries for 21 yards.
"He did some really good things out there and we were very happy," Keeler said. "I felt better after the game with what he did than I thought I was going to feel. We're going to be OK."
Delaware used a conservative game plan because of uncertainty and unfamiliarity about Maryland's altered defensive looks, Keeler said.
Schoenhoft had won a close competition for the starting job with red-shirt freshman Lou Ritacco. Recent transfer Sean Hakes also remains in the picture. He's had to run scout team offense as Delaware's only other quarterback.
The addition of a walk-on freshman quarterback this week, Mike Mathews, a 6-2, 170-pound product of Fox Lane High in Bedford, N.Y., could free Hakes to be more involved in the competition.
But Schoenhoft cemented his spot as No. 1.

AN UPSETTING WEEKEND
Appalachian State wasn't the only ranked team to go down on a wild weekend of upsets.
No. 6 Delaware gave up five turnovers, including four interceptions by quarterback Rob Schoenhoft (22-of-39 for 246 yards and one TD) in its 23-21 loss at No. 24 Furman.
Delaware coach K.C. Keeler was furious afterwards.
"We were underachievers today," said Keeler. "Furman is a good football team, but they are not as good as we are. We will live with this loss, but we have to move on." "We just made so many mistakes. We are embarrassed and its on me and on every player. I'm as upset with this loss as any game I've coached here. We made mistakes today we just can't make and haven't made before."

Delaware (2-2) reached paydirt on its first four possessions after the intermission to build a commanding 31-point advantage. Quarterback Robby Schoenhoft, an Ohio State transfer, keyed the first drive when he beatthe blitz with a 44-yard strike to wideout Aaron Love. Schoenhoft, at 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior, later fired a 20-yard scoring pass to Martwain Johnston.

Dispatch
Former Ohio State quarterback Rob Schoenhoft had a rough start at Delaware, throwing six interceptions in the Blue Hens' first three games, including four in a loss to Furman two weeks ago. But after throwing another pick in the first half against Albany, he rebounded and led his team to a 38-7 victory.
Schoenhoft, who transferred this summer to escape depth-chart burial beneath Todd Boeckman, Terrelle Pryor and Joe Bauserman, was 10 of 16 for 166 yards and a touchdown. His Delaware predecessor, Joe Flacco, made a similar move from Pitt and is now starting for the Baltimore Ravens.

UMass football team defeats Delaware

by The Republican Sports Desk Saturday October 04, 2008, 9:05

Schoenhoft was only 5 of 15 passing for 40 yards. He did throw an eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Robbie Agnone, but he also threw an interception to UMass free safety Jeromy Miles, who returned it 52 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that really put the game away.

Blue Hens focus on mending offense

QB, run game need improvement

By KEVIN TRESOLINI ? The News Journal ? October 7, 2008

NEWARK -- The evolution of the University of Delaware football team will continue to include a healthy amount of evaluation this week.
Much will be focused on the struggling offense and, in particular, the quarterback position, where Robby Schoenhoft completed just five of 15 passes in Saturday's 17-7 loss at Massachusetts in the Blue Hens' Colonial Athletic Association opener.
Keeler attributed Delaware's troubles to a litany of offensive problems, including a ground attack that couldn't spring anyone besides Schoenhoft for a run longer than 9 yards, less-than-adequate pass protection and the difficulty receivers had getting open against a talented secondary.
"Robby has to play better, but you can't put this on his shoulders," said Keeler, who felt some of Delaware's offensive linemen may have been overmatched. "We had a lot of pressure on him and we didn't run the ball effectively. ... We need to get some dynamics from that tailback spot."
Delaware managed only 167 total yards, including just 88 after scoring on its first possession.

2 concussions this season...not good for Robby

Link
The quarterback could be Sean Hakes. Or it could be Robby Schoenhoft, who has started every game for 2-5 Delaware but suffered a second concussion in Saturday's 27-3 loss to William & Mary at Delaware Stadium, making his status uncertain. He isn't expected to practice today.
"We're hoping to get the green light to let him practice Wednesday," Keeler said. "Sean [Hakes] will get a lot of reps and we'll kind of go from there."

I went to see Delaware play Maine a couple of weeks ago, and Robby didn't look very good at all. Poor decision making mainly. They really don't have much of a running game to help him out with, and the O-line could step it up a bit, but there is definately some room for improvement in his choices. Several times he should have either thrown it away or run it himself, and he threw passes instead. He's got a great arm, though. Hopefully he'll get a chance to grow and improve his decision making, but the fans around here are getting REALLY restless.....
