QB Rob Schoenhoft (official thread)

Hens show promise in Blue-White game | delawareonline | The News Journal

More details from the spring game

Quarterback Rob Schoenhoft, an Ohio State transfer, completed 12-of-25 passes for 162 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Freshman Lou Ritacco, with whom he is competing for the starting job, completed 9-of-17 for 119 yards, also with a touchdown and an interception.
"It's definitely going to be something where, hopefully, before we go to Maryland [Aug. 30 opener] we're going to figure out who our guy is going to be," Keeler said of a quarterback competition that's expected to go down to the wire. "They have a long, long, long way to go."

The touchdowns came on consecutive plays -- Schoenhoft's 26-yard throw to Mark Duncan and Ritacco's 30-yard heave to Martwain Johnston.

"Anytime you get a chance to play for Delaware, it's a good day," Schoenhoft said. "I think every day we go out there, we get better. Obviously, there's a lot more we need to work on to get ready for Maryland." . . .

UD quarterback competition gets bigger
By TOM TOMASHEK
Saturday, July 5, 2008

When former Ohio State quarterback Rob Schoenhoft transferred the University of Delaware after the 2007 season, it came as no surprise. Major college quarterbacks have become a trademark of Blue Hen coach K.C. Keeler?s program.

Since Keeler?s first season, Delaware?s starting quarterbacks have all been transfers from big-time programs: Andy Hall coming from Georgia Tech. Sonny Riccio from Missouri; and most recently Joe Flacco from Pittsburgh. Rob Schoenhoft, an Ohio State transfer, is the latest and most likely to succeed Flacco.

The practice of taking in major college transfers is not Delaware?s alone. Many other nationally-ranked programs, including some in the Colonial Athletic Association, have filled voids with major college talent; so it?s not to say that anything is wrong with making room for someone stepping down from a disappointing situation.

But the NCAA transfer policy, a free agency policy of sorts that allows a major college football player to step down and become eligible immediately, has drastically altered the dynamics of recruiting. What does it mean to the recruit who committed immediately to a Football Championship Subdivision (Division I-AA) program? One can only wonder what it means to youngsters such as red-shirt freshman Lou Ritacco who is suddenly in the mix with not only OSU transfer Schoenhoft, but apparently Sean Hakes, an Akron University transfer via a couple of community college stops.

One certainly can?t blame Schoenfelt for heading to Delaware. He likely never would have had the chance to become a Buckeye starter after a season in which he wound up staying home while two underclassmen traveled to the BCS championship game. In fact, quarterback Antonio Henton, who did make the Ohio State BCS travel squad recently transferred to Georgia Southern when it was announced that Ohio State had landed Terrelle Pryor, arguably the nation?s top 2008 high school quarterback recruit and is being touted as the Buckeye quarterback of the future.

Who will be the quarterback?

That may take some time to determine. And for the first time since Keeler became coach in 2002, it may not be the same guy all year. Ohio State transfer Rob Schoenhoft, who in 2007 was in a close spring battle for the Buckeyes starting job, did not throw the ball adeptly enough to nail down the UD job over freshman Lou Ritacco this spring. They enter preseason having the benefit of spring practice with the offense and new coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Ginn.

Now there's a third competitor, Sean Hakes, a former Texas high school whiz who redshirted as a true freshman at Akron in 2006, then left when a coaching change meant a move away from the passing offense in which he felt most comfortable. He played at a California junior college last fall, without much fanfare, and now enters what is Delaware's truest and most interesting quarterback competition since Ginn and Matt Nagy were vying for snaps in the late 1990s for coach Tubby Raymond.

"We have three guys, and it's going to be wide open," Keeler said.

Hens QB battle hits key point

Three-man field competes for starting job as opener looms

By MARTIN FRANK ? The News Journal ? August 11, 2008

NEWARK -- The quarterback competition at the University of Delaware is officially on, and it's about to get even more intense.

UD coach K.C. Keeler said the first week of practice was to enable the three quarterbacks competing for the starting job -- Ohio State transfer Rob Schoenhoft, redshirt freshman Lou Ritacco and junior college transfer Sean Hakes -- to get their footwork down and understand the system.
But everything is changing as the Blue Hens begin the second week of practice. Keeler said he will trim the competition to two, perhaps after a scrimmage Tuesday, and probably no later than after practice Wednesday.
There are fewer than three weeks until the UD season opener against Maryland on Aug. 30, and Keeler said he needs to start getting the top two quarterbacks more repetitions so they can get ready.
Keeler made sure to add that whoever gets eliminated still has a chance to become the quarterback at some point. It's just that it won't happen against Maryland. UD has a bye week after that and won't play again until Sept. 13 against West Chester.

CPD: Former OSU quarterbacks fight for jobs

Ohio State football: Former OSU quarterbacks fight for jobs

by Doug Lesmerises
Monday August 11, 2008, 12:27 PM

Quarterbacks Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton weren't going to start at Ohio State, and neither of them is guaranteed to be the starter with his new team.

Schoenhoft, at the University of Delaware, appears to be much closer to a job than Henton. That makes sense, because Schoenhoft made the move first and was at Delaware for spring ball, while Henton didn't leave Ohio State until June.

The Schoenhoft update comes from Martin Frank, my old friend from my former employer, The News Journal in Wilmington, Del. The News Journal blankets Delaware football, and Martin's latest info says the Blue Hens are preparing to pare their QB battle from three quarterbacks to two and Schoenhoft should be safe.

Rob Schoenhoft has a better chance to start the season as the starter at Delaware.

Martin wrote me that he'd be surprised if Schoenhoft isn't the starter when Delaware, the FCS runnerup last season to Appalachian State, opens the season at Maryland on Aug. 30.

First scrimmage answers few questions

Three-way battle at QB heats up, but overall 'a long way to go'

By BUDDY HURLOCK ? The News Journal ? August 13, 2008
NEWARK -- Coach K.C. Keeler put his University of Delaware football team through the paces Tuesday afternoon, when the Blue Hens held their first scrimmage of the preseason at Delaware Stadium.

Following the two-hour, 15-minute session, Keeler said the three-way race for the Hens starting quarterback position still had no leader.
"It's so tough to tell," Keeler said of making judgments from field level as he ran the scrimmage. Keeler said he would not comment any further regarding who may be in the lead at quarterback "until after I watch the tape."
Redshirt freshman Lou Ritacco (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) took 51 snaps, followed by sophomore Sean Hakes (6-3, 200), who took 38, and junior Rob Schoenhoft (6-6, 250), who took 36.

In unofficial statistics, Ritacco was 12-of-18 passing, Hakes was 8-of-12 with one interception and Schoenhoft was 6-of-10 and ran for a 9-yard touchdown.

Keeler to pick top two Hen QBs soon

By MARTIN FRANK ? The News Journal ? August 14, 2008

NEWARK -- University of Delaware football coach K.C. Keeler said he needed a little more time to pare the competition at quarterback down to two.

Keeler said he and the coaches were in their office until around 11:30 Tuesday night going over tape from the team's scrimmage earlier in the afternoon, and they hadn't had a chance to discuss the quarterback situation in depth.
Ohio State transfer Rob Schoenhoft, redshirt freshman Lou Ritacco and junior college transfer Sean Hakes are competing for the starting job.
Keeler was able to meet with the coaching staff Wednesday after practice and said a decision could come as soon as today's practice. The Hens are off Friday. They'll practice again Saturday and scrimmage Sunday.
Keeler said the competition should be down to two in time for the scrimmage.

Quarterback battle too close to call

Keeler hopes to pick UD's starter by Monday

By MARTIN FRANK ? The News Journal ? August 21, 2008
NEWARK -- Ideally, University of Delaware football coach K.C. Keeler would like to name a starting quarterback by Monday.

Realistically, he's not sure if he can.
Keeler said Wednesday that the battle between Ohio State transfer Rob Schoenhoft and redshirt freshman Lou Ritacco is still too close to call. He said it's "a little disappointing" that neither of them has taken the job by now. He added that they both are showing that UD can win with either one.
The Blue Hens open their season Aug. 30 at Maryland.
"We'd like to sit down and make a decision of which direction we're going to go," Keeler said. "They are both doing some good things. There's progress from both of them ... The next couple of days will be critical. I'd like to have a decision by Monday. If we can't do it, we can't do it. But that would be the ideal scenario."
It obviously would benefit the Hens to know the starting quarterback heading into the final week of practice before the game. That way, the starter can get the bulk of the repetitions with the rest of the starting unit.
Keeler said he sat down with offensive coordinator Brian Ginn for the first time on Tuesday to discuss the quarterback situation. Originally, UD had three quarterbacks competing for the top spot. Sean Hakes was taken out of the running last week, mainly because he only arrived on campus two days before training camp began on Aug. 4 and didn't have enough time to learn the offense.
Keeler said Ginn had the same analysis on the quarterback situation as he did.
"We don't have an answer," Keeler said. "We wanted to give this thing some time. I'm hoping one will run away with it, but at the same time, we're starting to feel that we have a chance to win with both of them. So that's a good thing."

Schoenhoft, Ritacco await QB decision

Keeler jokes that starter may be named in 3 a.m. text message

By MARTIN FRANK ? The News Journal ? August 25, 2008

NEWARK -- University of Delaware football coach K.C. Keeler is an astute observer of politics. That's why he might copy the method that Barack Obama used to inform people of his vice presidential choice when he names his starting quarterback for the Blue Hens' season opener.

Keeler said he would inform everyone by text message at 3 a.m. Saturday, hours before UD kicks off its season against Maryland.
"I love how Obama did it," Keeler said. "There was such a short window there, but he got it out so the pundits couldn't sidestep it. I'm learning a lot from that."
He was kidding. Or was he?
Cue the ominous voice: "It's 3 a.m., and your quarterbacks are safe and asleep. Who do you want taking the ball against Maryland?"
At some point this week, Keeler and offensive coordinator Brian Ginn will decide whether Ohio State transfer Rob Schoenhoft or redshirt freshman Lou Ritacco will start against the Terrapins.
Until then, everyone is left to wait, including the quarterbacks.
"Both of us want to know," Ritacco said. "We don't want to wait until the day of the game, just kind of hanging there not knowing. I think we'll know in the next day or two. It's exciting because it's coming down to the nitty-gritty."
Neither Schoenhoft nor Ritacco sees it as nerve-wracking. They see it as an intense competition between two players who have become good friends throughout the process while both improving a great deal since training camp began Aug. 4.

Keeler to reveal QB pick at kickoff

Lively competition will play out all week

By MARTIN FRANK ? The News Journal ? August 27, 2008
NEWARK -- You'll know whether Rob Schoenhoft or Lou Ritacco is the starting quarterback for the University of Delaware football team when the Blue Hens get the ball against Maryland on Saturday.

UD coach K.C. Keeler said Tuesday that he'll tell the quarterbacks and the rest of the team sometime in the next few days, and definitely before they leave for College Park, Md., on Friday.
He won't tell anybody else until game day.
"It's a big distraction for everybody if we're getting that out now, so we're probably going to wait until we get down there," Keeler said. "We're probably going to let the kids know sometime soon. They know it's coming down to the very end. Before we hop on the bus to go down to Maryland, I want one of them to know that they're going to be the starter."
Schoenhoft, a junior transfer from Ohio State, and Ritacco, a redshirt freshman, have battled for the job ever since the first day of training camp Aug. 4. Junior college transfer Sean Hakes was in the running, too. But he arrived on campus two days before camp started, and therefore didn't have enough time to learn the offense.

Robbie is a big dude. On a scramble, he lowered the boom on a DB and the announcer said he looked like a TE. That might've been a good spot for him at OSU. :(

Oh well, good luck Robbie. Hope it all works out well for him there.
