It hasn’t been a good month for Ohio State in the quarterback recruiting department. The Buckeyes lost Joe Bauserman to baseball and Mark Sanchez to Southern California.
That places much more importance on Rob Schoenhoft of Cincinnati St. Xavier, who reportedly will decide soon between OSU and Michigan.
Ohio State was hopeful of landing Sanchez, ranked the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the nation (and 10 th overall) by Rivals.com. He is 6 feet 3, 215 pounds and threw for 2,600 yards and 29 touchdowns with four interceptions last season.
Two of his Mission Viejo, Calif., teammates — offensive lineman Kevin Bemoll and defensive lineman Ryan Williams — already had committed to OSU.
But several Web sites, including ESPN.com and Rivals100.com, reported Sanchez committed to USC last weekend.
"I felt most comfortable at USC and felt they gave me the best chance to reach my ultimate goal of playing on Sundays," Sanchez said on WeAreSC.com.
Meanwhile, Bauserman signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in June. The Tallahassee, Fla., native had committed to the Buckeyes’ 2005 class but said he would consider playing professional baseball if he was drafted.
The right-handed pitched was taken in the fourth round and signed a contract that included a $300,000 signing bonus.
Bauserman was assigned to the Bradenton (Fla.) Pirates, a rookie-league team. In two starts, he is 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA.
Bradenton’s season runs through Aug. 28, and there was speculation that Bauserman could still enroll at OSU for winter quarter and go through spring practice, at least.
But reached last week in Bradenton, Bauserman made it clear he has cast his lot with baseball for the foreseeable future.
"I haven’t thought about it," he said of a football future. "That would be on down the road, not like two months from now. If anything, it would have to be something like I was done with baseball, like I’d have to be released."
Bauserman, 6-2 and 225 pounds, said Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel has told him he has a scholarship waiting if he ever switches sports. Other quarterbacks who tried baseball and returned to successful college football careers include John Elway, Chris Weinke and Akili Smith.
"(Baseball) is what I chose to do," Bauserman said. "It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up."
With Bauserman and Sanchez out of the mix, the Buckeyes have a strong need for another quarterback in the pipeline. OSU has Todd Boeckman as its only quarterback on scholarship past the 2006 season, when third-year sophomores Justin Zwick and Troy Smith will be gone.
Schoenhoft, 6-5 and 225, threw for 1,100 yards and 12 TDs last season.
How many QB recruits has this thinking cost the school (maybe Sanchez) ? Does it still apply now that Zwick has "been exposed" (BN rationale)?Buckskin86 said:he pointed to how long Zwick has left at tOSU. He also said that LSU is after him hard.

It just seems that bringing in 2 more QBs next year, on top of the 2+ this year (Rob S. & C. Jackson from Ely) - someone is going to want to move or get antsy.
Maybe DB is a better fit for some of them?
