Uhhhhh...huh?! Groom was never a backup QB. You may be thinking of the other #18, Jim Otis, who actually took a couple snaps at the end of one of the games (San Jose State?). And he was fifth on the depth chart, behind Krenzel, McMullen, Zwick, and Smith.

my comment is aimed at depth, yes we coulda taken the shirts of jz or troy, but that is an issue i would rather not see, having 4 or more qbs is essential to me
