The first half was back and forth with six lead changes. Southlake Carroll got on the board first before Duncanville came back to lead 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Ewers scramble for a 13-yard touchdown early to put Southlake Carroll back in front 14-13. After a Duncanville touchdown, Ewers threw a long touchdown pass to put Southlake Carroll back in front, 21-19 this time. But Duncanville closed out the first half scoring with a touchdown and 2-point conversion to go into the locker room with a 27-21 lead. Ewers finished the first half completing 5 of 14 passes for 103 yards. He threw for a touchdown and rushed for one.
Ewers connected on his first four passes to start the second half and Southlake Carroll got a 31-yard field goal to cut the Duncanville lead to 27-24 with 2:55 left in the third quarter. Running back Owen Allen followed with a spectacular 37-yard touchdown run to give Carroll the lead back at 31-27. Carroll got a 26-yard field goal part-way through the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 34-27. From there the Southlake Carroll defense did their job and shut out Duncanville the rest of the way for the win.
Duncanville had knocked Southlake Carroll out of the playoffs the past two seasons. Southlake Carroll’s only loss last season was to Duncanville in the state quarterfinals. Southlake Carroll now takes on Austin Westlake next weekend in the 6A state championship game.
