QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

SKULL SESSION: OHIO STATE’S 2021 CLASS HAS UNFINISHED BUSINESS, KYLE MCCORD PACED ALL QUARTERBACKS WHO FACED MICHIGAN IN 2023 AND THE 2014 CFP TITLE GAME REIGNS SUPREME

THAT’S INTERESTING. Someone once said, “Numbers never lie.”

I believe it was Billy Beane or Peter Brand (the fictional name for Paul DePodesta) in the 2011 film, “Moneyball.”

“Billy, this is Chad Bradford...”

“He gets on base...”

Apologies. Tangent.

This week, on X (formerly Twitter), I saw an argument: Kyle McCord had the best performance from a quarterback vs. Michigan in 2023.

That’s not an opinion. That’s a fact – a rather remarkable one, at that.

Of the 15 quarterbacks the Wolverines faced in 2023, McCord had the best QBR (89.7) with the most passing yards (271) and touchdown passes (two).

.
.
McCord’s two interceptions tied three quarterbacks – Minnesota’s Athan Kaliakmanis, Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa, and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. – for the most thrown vs. the Wolverines. And those two interceptions proved costly in Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan.

None of the other 14 quarterbacks who played against Michigan this season did any better against the Wolverines, though.
That's a great positive outlook, but none of the other quarterbacks were any good either. Penix was hurt and Taulia is upper-mid at best. Plus McCord had the best weapons available to him. This stat is exactly what is should be but doesn't truly mean anything in evaluating McCord.

He does have 1 advantage at Syracuse that he wouldn't of had at Ohio State:

College football's easiest schedules for 2024 season, ranked

SYRACUSE ORANGE

2024 schedule: Ohio, Holy Cross, UConn, at Boston College, at Cal, at NC State, at Pitt, Georgia Tech, Miami, Stanford, Virginia Tech

Ranked opponents in 247Sports way-too-early top 25: 2

Why is first-year coach Fran Brown and the Orange getting more love than Syracuse possibly should be in way-too-early ACC rankings with a rebuild in order? For starters, the 2024 schedule sets up for success. The road trip to NC State and a bout with Miami inside the Carrier Dome are the only games against teams we expected to be ranked inside the preseason top 25 several months from now.

Give him a clean pocket and open receivers and he’ll be great.
Let‘s see him make progressions and/or move his feet.
:slappy: Is that all it takes, a clean pocket and open receivers?
I get the disappointment for Kyle last season… the problem is he had a freaking high bar set for him by Haskins, Fields and Stroud.

Of course he was disappointing when compared to those guys.

I will be absolutely rooting for Syracuse this year as a second hand team as I did for Burrow.
He was a 5* QB coming out of HS. He was a disappointment because of his own results.

He screwed OSU with the timing of his announcement. I'm absolutely not rooting for him

Rooting for him against Clemson and Miami otherwise won’t really think about Syracuse. Certainly do not see him as a Burrow or even Ewers “one that got away”. His timing was weak but his actions helped cleared the way for a wave of NIL $ that we believe will be a facelift for the program. This is college football of today. Trying to still find enjoyment with less purity and tradition.

Neither of those throws above looked great to me. The first was behind the receiver and the second high for no reason I can see. It is too bad this kid did not work out at Ohio State but, if the comments and demands supposedly uttered by his father are true, I sense that he will one day regret his father's influence on his choices.
