Wankel. There was a psychologist in Columbus back in the 1960s who had one of the first five Mazda Wankel engines in America. I can't remember who it was.

Of course, Herbstreit is not a wankel.

One more for the vault.

In a pathetically lame attempt to identify Herbstreit as a local, he was asked to identify who made Hang on Sloopy a hit in the 1960s "as one of two "true Buckeyes" at the game today".

He had no idea but made a big deal about how Baylor was his #1 team because while he "knows that they really haven't played anybody", "they've been the most consistent this year... blowing out everybody".

Just checked the Massey power rankings...

Baylor (6-0)
Opponent win-loss record: 15-22
Opponents in top 20: 0
Opponents in top 100: 2

Ohio State (7-0)
Opponent win-loss record: 23-24
Opponents in top 20: 2
Opponents in top 100: 6

I think Massey still has to update his model this week, but the comparison makes the point. Nothing is quite so sadly transparent as the actions of a jilted, vain lover.

I think he's just not a very smart person, which is why he gets into pissing matches on the Internet, sounds like a cliche machine during broadcasts, feels the need to give obviously bullshit "insider" information on Ohio State, and is the only ESPN broadcaster in the world too insecure to blatantly and proudly display bias towards their favorite team on air.

He's just dumb.

Baylor gave up 31 points to FCS Lamar, 35 points to Texas Tech, and 38 points yesterday to West Virginia. Lamar scored less points (27) against Southeastern Louisiana than they did against Baylor. Now, granted Texas Tech is #3 in scoring offense at 49 ppg, but West Virginia is #30 with 36 ppg.

Baylor may pick up some votes, but beating WVU by 24 is a lot less impressive IMO than housing Penn State by 28. The 'Eers were the first team Baylor has played that qualifies as a competent D1 team. Their record is the ultimate phantom resume.

Kirk Herbstreit apologizes for accusing Baylor DB Terrell Burt of faking injury

Those watching ABC’s telecast of Oklahoma’s unseating of Baylor Saturday night saw witness to the usually cool, leveled Kirk Herbstreit uncharacteristically cork off on Baylor defensive back Terrell Burt for what appeared to be a blatant dive.

And at first glance, it appears that’s exactly what Burt (13) did.

Turns out, though, Burt wasn’t actually hurt. He’d sustained an ankle injury covering a kickoff, and the cameras caught teammate Ryan Reid telling Burt to get down rather than play through injury.

That left Herbstreit in a tough spot after calling Burt’s quote-unquote dive as “bush league” and “unethical.” Then, as broadcasters in a high-paced game are wont to do, he moved on and didn’t address it on the broadcast again.

So on Sunday, Herbstreit back away from his comments severely by issuing an multi-tweet apology on his Twitter account.
