QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

Dude would never have been a Buckeye were it not for Jim. He was overrated (clap clap clap) coming out of HS.

annnd OSU was on the seat of it's ass in terms of talent

He wouldn't have gotten an offer even later in the Cooper years and most certainly never under JT or Urban

There was a period in the late 80's to the very early 90's where OSU was recruiting at the level a Wisconsin or MSU is recruiting at today.People clamoring for more Ohio born 3 star's who bleed scarlet and grey would do well to remember those days. You never want to take that too far.

I started at tOSU fall '88. I lived that.

Yup, if he hadn't lost me by then, when he threw out Mike like that... I was beyond done with the guy.

Same, particularly when Mike is a friend of mine and literally any level of due diligence would have shown how wrong he was. Btw, the @Honor&Glory post was about as epic as any I have seen here, bring back the GPA just for that one.

Well if broadcasting doesn't workout, he could still find work in television

When a kid says stupid [Mark May], an adult has two choices*
1) ignore because, well, they are just a dumb ass kid who doesn't know anything
2) engage and validate their stupidity

*I'm not talking about our jobs as parents with our own dumbass kids
Put aside whatever Kirk Herbstreit said to Jackson Carman, or vice-versa, which neither you nor I nor anyone else really cares about. Speaking generally, a kid doesn't just become an adult when he turns 21, or whatever age you choose. It's a gradual process, and a 17/18 year old isn't a 9 year old. We're not doing anyone any favors if we pretend he is.

kid in the young adult sense of the word, not the grade school sense of the word

yes, you obviously have a higher expectation of the teen/young adult but the fully formed middle aged actual adult should see them for the inexperienced dipshit they can be and act accordingly....which, again, is not to drop down to their level and engage in their dipshit behavior

I'd say, go ahead and treat the 17 year old like a grown-ass man. Or in this case, reasonably criticize what he actually said where you genuinely think it's appropriate. But don't exaggerate what he said to the point of making it up. The problem isn't that Herbstreit has 35 years on Carman, and therefore should ignore him or refrain from criticism. It's that Herbstreit embellished Carman's comment to the point of outright falsification (as I understand it, based just on reading the posts here). That falsification is acting like a kid (or a self-important entertainer) whether the person whose comments you're falsifying is 47 years old or 17 years old. And for what it's worth, I do think recruits (or players on the team) should keep their mouths shut in public regarding who they think should be playing. A 17 year old who doesn't have enough sense to know that, or who thinks himself important enough to need to weigh in, deserves to be enlightened.

I think we are saying the same thing, you are just giving much better detail than I was.

You give the young man a sense of how he should behave "don't criticize people who already are where you are trying to get to", you don't drop down to his level and engage on his terms (calling the kid a clown on twitter).

Was Herbstreit engaging on Carman's terms, or was he going below them? As I said, I don't really know the situation, and am just going on what I've read here. But as I understand it, Carman offered an opinion that he probably shouldn't have, but without overtly insulting anyone. Herbstreit responded with an arguably valid criticism in substance, but also threw in a misrepresentation of what the guy actually said, and an unimaginative insult. I agree that we're largely saying the same thing, but Herbstreit's error wasn't that he acted like Carman, it's that he acted worse.
