Breaking News: Herbstreit, Musburger Brawl after Rose Bowl

Call it a Rose Bowl Rumble.
Just minutes after ABC's broadcast of Tuesday's Illinois-USC game, Kirk Herbstreit and Brent Musburger had to be separated by stadium security during a brief but violent skirmish.
Apparently, the dispute centered around who had a bigger man-crush on USC head coach Pete Carroll.
Musburger, the senior member of the broadcast duo, spent most of the four-hour telecast gushing over Carroll's forays into Southern California ghettos in search of new running backs. Herbstreit matched his play-by-play man with a compliment-to-commercial ratio that made Carroll blush during his postgame press conference.
At one point during the game, Musberger observed, "Carroll could probably start 11 song girls and still find a way to beat the Illini."
Herbstreit countered, "Heck Brent, look at him. He's hot enough to be a song girl!"
Sources close to Bleacher Report tell us the scuffle broke out as both broadcasters rushed to the elevator in an effort to intercept Carroll in the parking lot.
ABC sideline reporter Lisa Salters, who interviewed the USC head coach following a 49-17 win, confirmed that both Herbstreit and Musburger offered to trade assignments with her before the broadcast.
ABC declined comment for this story.

I think some people assume those that dislike Herbie's style, dislike it because he isn't an OSU homer. I don't think that is it at all.

It's the over-the-top rooting against teams stumbling in front of Ohio State so they go to the Rose Bowl instead. I think I heard him say it about 30 times, that he'd rather see Ohio State play in the Rose Bowl rather than the Championship. Then, OSU makes the the championship and his first comments are, can OSU hang with the SEC speed? Isn't this the same guy that wrote after the debacle in the desert that speed had nothing to do with it, but hunger instead? So, according to Kirk, we didn't lose to UF because of a lack of speed, but in our upcoming championship game it will be interesting to see if we can keep up with LSU's SEC speed? I'm confused.

Still have issues with his comments regarding Tressel and coming to OSU if you're an offensive recruit.

Again, he doesn't need to be an OSU homer, but he also doesn't need to contradict himself every other TV appearance. Thankfully, OSU has a chance to play LSU and prove how good they really are according to Herbie. I didn't hear him say that against Michigan St, Purdue, Penn st, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. I swear, every weekend same dumb statements. "We get to see what OSU is made of this week for the first time." And even if he's right about not truly knowing how good this team is, can't he preface his statements with: "I thought Purdue and Penn St were better than they actually are so hopefully this week we get to see what OSU is actually made of." I feel like he thinks the general public has a memory span of 2-3 days.

I don't know, it drives me nuts.

And yes, Todd Blackledge is the best analyst out there. See's all of the details most miss, and has a good delivery. It must make him insane having to work with Mike Patrick, probably the most clueless of all the announcers.

Yeah. IMO, only one other QB, who I'll refer to only as "the white Reggie Ball" stands between him and the title "worst OSU starting QB I can remember."

Stanley Jackson was white?

Agreed... with that part at least.

Did any of y'all watch the Fiesta Bowl preview last night?

Holtz was on the left, then May in the middle, and then Blackledge was on the far right. As Holtz and May made dumb or cliche comments after the other, I was looking at Blackledge the entire time. He was fidgeting, getting up from his chair for a brief second, sitting back down, moving his fingers around, etc. It was like he was saying, "Why the fuck am I here with these douchebags?" Absolutely priceless moment.

I believe that Kirk piles on that "SEC speed" talk in order to help feed the hype and blow smoke up LSU's ass so they get overconfident. And to feed the fire in the belly of the tOSU players. At times, you can see that Fowler even recognizes that.

To others, not to billmac:

Worrying about everything that Herbie says isn't worth the effort. And to think that on Monday night he won't be rooting for the Buckeyes as hard as anybody else on this board is ridiculous.

Word is out that Kirk Herbstreit is moving to Connecticut, where he works for ESPN. The former Ohio State quarterback's Upper Arlington home went on the market recently with a $3.7 million asking price.

Is that the house he just built?

I know he bought a house in UA and was tearing it down to build a much bigger one.

Makes sense....he has slowly transitioned out of his Daily Sportstalk show on 1460 The Fan in C-bus. Now, Chris Spielman and former CPD writer Bruce Hooley host a show once reserved for Hooley and Herbie.

I have friends who are neighbors with Herbie, thus I have seen his crib. $3.7 mill seems high, but it is a pretty incredible home (from the outside).

Maybe Herbie is off to replace the Horse Whisperer (aka Dana Jacobsen) on whatever Cold Pizza is being called these days?
