Herbstreit is going to realize one day just how much he really needs Ohio State fans and how much his short-sightedness is going to cost him. I'm not arguing that ESPiN is not a great opportunity or that he wont' earn enough to last one of us a lifetime, provided it last long enough.
Problem is that the ESPiN gig is not going to last forever and he has to be wondering if it will last long enough to amass the resources necessary to maintain the lifestyle.
Herbstreit's difficulties are not rooted in the Ohio State fan base. They are rooted in an ego that wants recognition for his accomplishments as an Ohio State quarterback and an "insider" role at the WHAC. Unfortunately, his accomplishments, while appreciated by fans, were rather modest and he queered any chance he might have had at developing a role at WHAC by behaving as he has.
I am one of those silent fans to whom Herbstreit refers. If he lived next door, I wouldn't be saying things to his wife and kids or him. But what he fails to realize is the deep sense of betrayal that I and others feel when we see him or hear his voice, due to his passive and active aggression toward the Ohio State football program.
Five years ago, I looked forward to the insights that Herbstreit shared during football games. Sadly, acting out his ESPiN script, he hasn't really imparted particularly informative insights about football games for some time now. Instead, the opinions and actions, that fail to move him any closer to fans of other teams, further alienate him from Buckeye fans.
And, Herbie, it's not a minority. The Tat Five are not my favorite guys right now, for what they did and the impact on Coach Tressel due to his response. But Pryor and I are now on one side concerning who is and who is not a fake Buckeye fan.
So, one wonders just how long it will be--six months, two years--before WBNS will reconsider his local program. How long before ESPiN moves on to younger, fresher talent? How long before Herbstreit rues the terrible way that he has made a hash of his relationship with Ohio State fans?
