Ohio State spotlight: QB Kenny Guiton

Most of the time a quarterback controversy involves who should be No.1. But at Ohio State this week during preparations for today?s game at unbeaten Illinois, it was all about who should be the No.1 backup.
The consensus among the fans was it should be sophomore Kenny Guiton. They have grown tired of senior Joe Bauserman?s throw-it-to-the-seats show, climaxed by that dreadful 1 of 10 passing performance during the Buckeyes?s fourth-quarter implosion in the 34-27 loss at Nebraska last week.
No one knows really how good Guiton might be as the backup to Braxton Miller, whose sprained ankle caused him to leave that game in the middle of the third quarter with the Buckeyes up 27-13. But there were two thoughts that reinforced the idea Guiton deserved a chance:
1) Could he be any worse than Bauserman has been since the efficient season-opening win over Akron?
2) With the ability to throw and run, Guiton is the best facsimile the Buckeyes have to Miller in the sense of trying to run most of the same plays.
Plus, with Guiton there is a clean sheet of paper. He appeared in only five games last year in a mop-up role, throwing just two passes, completing one and having one intercepted. He has not played at quarterback this year.
Bauserman, who lost the starting job to Miller beginning with game three, is 40 of 86 passing, with one interception. And remember, he was 12 of 16, including for three touchdowns, in the season opener.
?Kenny will get some more reps ? and he'll get probably more and more opportunities in the weeks to come,? coach Luke Fickell said.
It was an indication that a change was in the works, though the backup quarterbacks teammates were trying to steer clear of the conundrum.
?I?m sure the coaches will make a good decision on who should be second string and all that business,? center Michael Brewster said.
