Joe Bauserman's immediate future is in professional baseball.
Bauserman, a fourth-round selection of Pittsburgh out of Lincoln High School, signed with the Pirates last Friday. Bauserman was assigned to the organization's Rookie League team in Bradenton.
Bauserman, a right-handed pitcher with a mid-90 mph fastball, received a $300,000 signing bonus and will maintain an off-season home in Tallahassee, according to his family.
Bauserman, also a two-year starter at quarterback for the Trojans, had committed to Ohio State on national signing day last February. If Bauserman had elected not to sign with the Pirates, his plan was to enroll at Ohio State in January and play football for the Buckeyes under coach Jim Tressel.
In an open letter to Ohio State fans, Bauserman said, "Coach Tressel has left open the door for me to eventually become a Buckeye. Today, I am a Pittsburgh Pirate. However, tomorrow I might be a Buckeye. We will see. No one knows what the future holds."
Bauserman, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder, was the area's top selection in the June 7 amateur draft. He also told Buckeye fans that "professional baseball was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."
Rob Sidwell, the Pirates' area scout in charge of Florida, says the organization's focus will be to improve Bauserman's consistency.
"We loved his arm, and his breaking ball got better as the year went on," said Sidwell, who lives in Orlando. "There was a lot of inconsistency, but he was very good when he put it all together. Our job now, that he's in our system, is to help him become more consistent."
