QB Joe Bauserman (official thread)

Maybe it's me, but Joe is looking pretty out of shape, IMO. He's not a running back or Wide-receiver...and he isn't as bad as a Alshon Jeffery, but still...once Pryor left, you'd think this guy was kicking ass and taking names in the fitness department.

I felt the same way. Sounds like both Guiton and Miller have put in serious work in the weight room, especially Kenny, and at this point, I'd like to see either of them get the nod at QB. I'm interested in seeing how the rest of camp unfolds however and I'd like to see one of them, any of them really, emerge as a clear leader and signal caller.

A couple of friends and I were just looking at the pictures of the players arriving. We all agreed that he didn't look anywhere near what is considered football shape.

I hate to pile on, but Bauserman is also pretty terrible at "finishing plays" when he takes off running out of the pocket. This is something that the coaches yell about every single play and the RBs and WRs often run 20 or 30 yards (and further, Boom usually runs to the endzone or damn close every time he touches the ball no matter where he starts at on the field) down the field after all of the defenders have "wrapped them up" since there are no pads at the moment.

Bauserman appears to just go through the motions and stops running at first contact when he leaves the pocket, something that NO ONE else on the team does. Like I said, I hate to pile on, but he just doesn't seem like he is going the extra mile to earn the starting spot.

Senior quarterback Joe Bauserman, the backup the past two seasons, knows his every move is being studied.

Amid the buzz over freshman Braxton Miller?s rise in Ohio State?s quarterback competition, the refreshed play of fifth-year senior Joe Bauserman has often been lost.

The backup to Terrelle Pryor the past two years, Bauserman turns 26 in October and is perhaps staring at the end of his football career if he doesn?t make something happen this month.

He has stepped on the gas, quarterbacks coach Nick Siciliano said.

?He?s got a little bit of a light at the end of the tunnel, where before he really didn?t have that,? Siciliano said. ?He has stepped up his game from a preparation standpoint. He wants to get better. It is very important to him to be the quarterback here.?

Bauserman made that clear in conversations with Siciliano, offensive coordinator Jim Bollman and coach Luke Fickell before preseason camp started.

?I asked the coaches about some of the things they were looking for, and I have done my best to give them what they want to see from me,? Bauserman said. ?I?ve tried to be that leader and that quarterback they want.?

The urgency in his approach is something he didn?t always show in the past few years. But his new approach isn?t just designed to draw attention.

?I can?t change who I am; I am always going to go out there and be who I am,? the soft-spoken Bauserman said. ?I don?t go out there to each practice trying to switch things up. I just go out there and try to make sure I do the right things as best I can.?

So according to the depth chart, it's pronounced BAH-zer-man. I thought it was BOW-zer-man.

Me too. That may have something to do with the fact that every time I have heard it pronounced on TV or radio it has been BOW-zer-man.

The Dispatch reported that Joe would be the starter on Saturday.

Fifth-year senior Joe Bauserman will take the first snap at quarterback for Ohio State when it opens its football season on Saturday against Akron, coach Luke Fickell said this afternoon.

On Ohio State's depth chart, Bauserman and freshman Braxton Miller are listed as co-starters. It's been widely expected that Bauserman would be named the starter, with Miller to receive substantial playing time.

"If we were taking the first snap now, Joe would probably take the first snap," Fickell said. "We know we're going to need them both. We want to make sure we can put them out there in front of 106,000 and see how they respond."

Fickell said that Bauserman's leadership has earned him the first crack at the job.

"He's done a really good job through camp," Fickell said. "I've been impressed with what he's done.

"It doesn't mean I'm not impressed with Braxton as well. We've been impressed enough with him to list him in the 'Or' category. The whole idea is we want to continue to create competition and make sure those guys understand that by saying "Or" we need both."

Cont'd ...

While I'll support any OSU QB, I really, really think this is going to be exactly like TP's freshman year. Use the first couple of games to work him into the lineup, and by conference play, Miller (the future) is the clear-cut starter.

Having an athletic QB is a luxury we'll need once conference play starts. Too many offensive plays break down, and it sucks to have a statue back there. After 7 years of athletic QBs, if Bauserman comes out and throws for 500 yards and 6 scores, it will be hard to get used to a pure pocket passer.
