QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Barrett Gunning To Get His Job Back

J.T. Barrett wants everybody to know he is fully healthy again … and he will be coming for his job as the starting quarterback at Ohio State during preseason camp.

“I do feel 100 percent,” said Barrett, a third-year sophomore. “I was cleared in May and I really started going in June. I was doing all the workouts full speed and I’m feeling pretty good.”

Barrett talked about the dynamic of the quarterback battle between himself and Jones.

“The main thing is we want the best for this team,” Barrett said. “I say that whether it would be myself or Cardale or Braxton when he was playing quarterback. It was about who was going to put our team in position to win.

“If I could help Cardale see something that I saw on film or whatever, I would be a bad guy if I did not help him. At the end of the day, it would make him better and it would make our team better. That’s our approach to it. Do I want Cardale to have success? Yes.

“I want my best play to be better than his best play. I still want him to perform his best. But the fact is I still want to be the quarterback. I don’t want him to not succeed. That wouldn’t be a lift to me.”

I think we can dispense with the lame "peyote/crack" talk and get back to football
.
I think Barrett starts because he will not be denied a chance to make up for the VTech loss last year.

Long season term, Cardale could make the offense more explosive with his "stretch the field" arm. And that's a rare thing in any program.

But JT will own all the records by the time he's done.

This is what team sports and life is all about. These are some of the best quotes I've ever heard, true leadership.

Buckeye Football Notebook: J.T. Barrett Improves Where He Wanted to Most

15-08-14-FB-0213.jpg

Last season J.T. Barrett set 19 school records — two of which are also B1G records — for his stellar play as a redshirt freshman. In fact, that number may now actually be 20 records, as 19 school records by a player's redshirt sophomore year has to be a record as well.

Nobody has ever considered Barrett a finished product, as he continues to improve his arm strength and his accuracy, but it was with his understanding of the offense where he wanted to gain the most improvement.

"Last year I feel like I was in a position where I knew the offense," he said this weekend. "So we called whatever the play was, a pass play. So I could run that play well, but that was it. I guess I didn’t really go into the understanding of why we did certain things on offense. So now I'm trying to actually run the offense instead of just running plays. So if we’re running a sprint out to the right and there’s somebody blitzing to our right, well that’s not a good play. So get to a better play.

"I feel like that’s where I wanted to get better at. And also just helping out the receivers. I feel like I’m an accurate quarterback so just do my best where the receivers, all they have to do is catch it and make plays after that. Whether it be breaking a tackle or do whatever. Just get it to the playmaker’s hands and make it easier for them. I think those are the two main things I tried to focus on."

J.T. Barrett Emphasizes his Desire to be Ohio State's Starting Quarterback

BarrettCartPoints.jpg

Before Cardale Jones, before the Big Ten Championship, before 42-35 over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and before winning the national championship, there was J.T. Barrett.

There’s no telling how Ohio State would have finished the 2014 season if Barrett hadn’t broken his ankle in the fourth quarter against Michigan, but it’s safe to say the team did well with No. 16 at quarterback up until that point.

Barrett, who won the starting job over Jones after Braxton Miller suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, led the Buckeyes to a 10-1 record and was a Heisman candidate heading into the rivalry game with the Wolverines.

After Jones’ performance in the postseason, Barrett is locked in another quarterback battle, one that he would like to win.

“I still want to be the quarterback and be out there making calls,” he told the media during Fall Camp. “I don’t want to downplay that.”

Barrett missed OSU’s spring practice as he recovered from the ankle injury meaning he missed out on plenty of reps. Once he was healthy and cleared to practice this summer, Barrett worked to make up for lost time.

“We still had class, so it was wake up and go to class, and then I had workouts at 1:00, and then just be up here and try to be a better quarterback,” Barrett said of his summer. “Whether it be throwing a little bit extra after workouts or just watching film.

“Just be here until I felt necessary to close my eyes from watching film. So I was up here quite a bit in the summer, getting that work with guys.”

J.T. Barrett Has the Playmaking Ability to Compensate for Ohio State's Receiver Losses

14-11-15-FB-0491.jpg

All offseason, the question surrounding Ohio State has focused on who will be the starting quarterback when the Buckeyes open the season against Virginia Tech. Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett have battled throughout Fall Camp, yet head coach Urban Meyer says he will not name a starter before the first game.

Yesterday, we covered the issues OSU could have in the season opener with Virginia Tech due to the lack of proven wide receiver options. With Corey Smith, Jalin Marshall, and Dontre Wilson suspended to start the season and the injury to sophomore Noah Brown, the Buckeyes are looking for alternatives in the passing game to take on the Hokies.

While either quarterback will have the same receiving threats, the lack of weapons makes it more likely for Barrett to win the job, as the Ohio State searches for more playmakers.

Over the first two years of the Meyer-era in Columbus, quarterback Braxton Miller carried the offensive load statistically. Not only did he throw for 4,133 yards and 39 touchdowns, but rushed for 2,339 more yards and 25 scores.

This was no accident. Meyer’s offense features a quarterback who can make plays both with his arm and his feet, and Miller was exceptional at doing both. He was also the best option the Buckeyes had to make things happen as the OSU staff recruited other playmakers to put around him.

Miller remains in Columbus but is now at wide receiver where he looks to take that skill set to another position after two major shoulder surgeries. With a lack of proven receiving threats, Barrett is the next-best option to run all aspects of Meyer’s offense.

In his first season as the starting quarterback, Barrett rushed for over 85 yards and just under one touchdown per game. When the pass wasn’t there, Barrett was able to make a play with his legs and pick up yards.
