QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Yea that was a rumor/speculation that was out there that he was over the .02 minor limit but under the .08 legal limit. But he was at .099.
When I was Barrett's age I could drink beer legally in Ohio and the legal limit was .10. If that had been me back then they would have sent me on my merry way. Setting up a DUI checkpoint on a 25 mph city street doesn't have anything to do with public safety. It has to do with revenue generation, same as lowering the legal limit to .08. (If MADD gets their way they'll lower it to .06!)

JT wasn't a threat to anybody. Since Texas had the good sense to rule DUI checkpoints unconstitutional, maybe that explains why JT didn't know that they target people who try to avoid the road block. If he had just stayed in his lane and kept his cool, he probably would have been fine. They should probably teach the players to never blow, though, unless they haven't had anything to drink.

Fwiw, I think the punishment is appropriate. One game for DUI is pretty standard. I think the .08 limit and DUI checkpoints are complete bullshit. Put me at .08 and let me compete in an obstacle course against someone using their phone and I'll win every time.

Serious question regarding the loss of scholarship. I admittedly have not read past page 119 of this thread.

1). The media keeps using the word "term" to describe the length of time his scholarship is suspended. Is Ohio State on Semesters or quarters?
2). Since his native state is Texas, I'm assuming he'll pay OO State tuition for that period.
3). Having said that, is he essentially being fined $20,000 for his action?

It's for the summer term, which just means that JT just won't be taking classes next summer or getting the stipend that comes along with getting class paid for. Worst case he'll have to find some sort of summer job to help pay for rent and food that he otherwise would have gotten money for. I'm guessing he lives with other players that can probably cover the rent and he can save up enough from his regular stipend to cover expenses until the season starts. He'll still have access to facilities and everything else.

Got it - thanks for the clarification.
Worst case scenario, he gets an outside job and his graduation is delayed a semester.

My understanding is that this is the same penalty levied on Mewhort and Stoneburner in 2012. Since Barrett will lose his aid for the summer quarter he will not be able to participate in team activities and loses the benefits offered to scholarship players (training table, meals, etc ...)

I'm fairly confident his family was consulted prior to that particular punishment being handed down. I assume they indicated they could handle the additional financial burden if they needed to.

I also assume he's going to have the benefits reinstated anyway because he's going to do whatever Meyer asks of him in order to make that happen, so the point is probably moot.

Unless the rules have changed in the past 15 years he'll still be able to attend summer workouts just no money or food. That would be like saying no walk-ons are allowed to attend summer workouts.

Press reports say that he will not be able to attend summer workouts under supervision, but can use the facilities otherwise.

I think that JT Barrett was foolish and that he should be punished. I'm not sure that the punishment isn't a bit harsh, but it will be a life lesson and no one will say that Urban Meyer is soft on this kind of thing.

He has the opportunity to earn the summer stuff back, which he almost certainly will.

I don't trust the press. Probably moot anyway since he'll surely earn back whatever he's losing once everything dies down. It isn't like anyone is in the know as to whether he gets summer class paid for or not.
