On Thursday, Buckeye head coach Ryan Day was asked about Haskins' demotion in Washington on his weekly radio show. Having served as Ohio State's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017 and 2018 while Haskins was in Columbus, Day knows the former Heisman Trophy finalist well.
"Dwayne is a very talented young man and I've got a special place in my heart for him and this is not easy for him to go through," Day said. "But he's going to come out of it and he's got a lot of football ahead of him. But it is difficult. There is a lot that goes into playing when you get to the NFL and you get to that level.
"I know him. He's resilient, he's strong, he going to work through this. All great quarterbacks have gone through adversity and for him, he really didn't face a ton of adversity when he was here. He kind of played behind J.T. (Barrett) and won the job and then kind of went to the NFL."
Day makes a good point on Haskins. After redshirting as a true freshman in 2016, Haskins became Barrett's backup the next year after an injury to Joe Burrow in fall camp. He played in eight games for the Scarlet and Gray that season, throwing for 565 yards and four touchdowns to one interception off the bench. Haskins won the starting quarterback job over Burrow the following spring and put together a record-setting year at Ohio State in 2018 with 4,831 passing yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
