QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

...

C.J. Stroud isn’t the physical specimen of Anthony Richardson or Will Levis, but he still wowed folks in Indy. The 21-year-old from Ohio State threw for more than 8,000 yards in two seasons with an 85-to-12 TD-to-INT ratio, he torched the Georgia defense in his final college game, and he was razor sharp in his throwing session Saturday. Every throw looked smooth, effortless and natural. His deep ball was even more impressive than some NFL personnel folks expected.

“It’s the consistency he has with his arm, not only the accuracy but knowing when to throw what type of ball,” said the NFL QB coach. “C.J. is excellent at choosing the right club per se.”

This is a guy rival coaches have been raving about the past two years: “He’s the most accurate quarterback I’ve ever played against,” said one longtime college defensive coordinator who has faced a bunch of future top-10 draft picks. “It’s like he couldn’t have handed the ball to his receivers any better, and they’re 30, 40 yards downfield. He’s got high-level NFL accuracy and NFL vision. I think he understands the game so well and gets it out in under three seconds. He has a very high football IQ and really understands what you’re trying to do to him.”

Stroud didn’t just shine on the field but off it as well in his interviews, and even in between them. A quick story: Early in the week in Indy, Stroud was amid other prospects in the speed dating circuit of formal interviews, being escorted from one suite to another inside Lucas Oil Stadium to meet with front office folks, coaches and scouts. Then he spotted a familiar face, an NFL team staffer he recognized from a recruiting trip he took to a school he didn’t attend.

Even though the guy wasn’t one of the coaches who actually had been a point person in his recruitment, Stroud not only remembered him, he also remembered his now 12-year-old son who he’d met on a recruiting trip four years ago. He even asked to FaceTime with the kid right then and there and proceeded to laugh it up with his little buddy like he was the kid’s uncle. So much for combine jitters.

I feel this is better for Fields than it is for Stroud. JF gets some extra weapons to help him out. Stroud goes #1, but doesn't get a first rounder next year, a 2nd rounder the year after that, and loses the best WR on a team that already traded away their best offensive player during the season. Hopefully they have someone that knows how to rebuild a team. Not like the Texans are a better option.

The offensive line is in worse shape than the Carolina skill positions. Bottom 5 the last few years running.

Hopefully the Bears use the picks and cap space wisely. They’re in a position, now, to make a series of moves that could create a nice multi-year run. Fix the lines, and I’d start with the OL > DL, and get a couple of guys who can catch a flipp’n pass and it will be a huge improvement. We’ll see how they execute. Not holding my breath, but cautiously optimistic.

2023 NFL MOCK DRAFT ROUNDUP: C.J. STROUD NOW THE CONSENSUS NO. 1 OVERALL PICK

QB C.J. STROUD
No. 1, Carolina Panthers:
15 (Bell, Brown, Draft Tek, Easterling, Edwards, Farrar, Fowler, Iyer, Mellor, Menendez, Middlehurst-Schwartz, SB Nation, Schrock, Standig, 33rd Team)
No. 2, Houston Texans: 5 (Johannes, McShay, Stackpole, Tankathon, Wilson)
No. 4, Indianapolis Colts: 2 (Kelly, Trapasso)

Just about everyone agrees that Stroud and Alabama quarterback Bryce Young will be the first two players selected in this year’s draft, with most analysts believing the Panthers are targeting Stroud. Only five of the 22 mock drafts we surveyed have the Panthers drafting Young, and all five of those mock drafts have the Texans taking Stroud with the second pick.

There has been some chatter that the Panthers are also interested in Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, who occupies the top spot in the other two mock drafts. Both of those mock drafts have Young going second to the Texans and Stroud landing with the Colts’ No. 4 overall pick, which is now seen as his draft floor after the Panthers’ trade up and his excellent combine throwing session.

As much as I like Stroud, I'm kindof torn on him as a prospect if you're talking #1 pick overall franchise guy. I don't know if I see that
I do. He has accuracy of a Drew Brees with more arm. That's a franchise guy. Now will he ever reach that high. Considering that's hall of fame probably not. But as a prospect that's where he's at. Which is why I am amused when a lot of Pro Comparisons are Goff. He has a way better deep ball that Goff

None of that means he'll reach his ceiling. I'd argue 99% of players don't even some damn fine players never reach their Ceiling. And very very few transcend their ceilings. The Josh Allen's of the world that fix a huge flaw in their game.

Agreed on not being convinced on franchise status but if you need a QB, I do think that Stroud is the best available in this draft class and you might take a flyer on him at #1. His arm talent is very much there and he has the athleticism to escape the pocket and improvise, he just wasn't good at it 90% of the time he was at OSU (if we throw out the UGA game). That may or may not translate to the NFL, but I sure as hell would not take any of Levis or Richardson over Stroud if QB is the pick....Young is debatable to me. In my head, I think back to Cincy taking Burrow as a no-brainer at #1 and seeing how that worked out. Not sure that Stroud is a no-brainer like that, but he is who I would pick first at QB if that was the scenario (and it is for Carolina, pretty confident they move up to get CJ).
