CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cardale Jones, Ohio State's third-string quarterback and flavor of the past month, is no surprise to Jim Tressel.

Jones, a former Glenville quarterback, is matched in the national championship game on Jan. 12 in suburban Dallas against the runaway Heisman Trophy winner, Marcus Mariota of Oregon. Tressel, the former Ohio State coach, now president of Youngstown State, recruited Jones to Ohio State.

A quarterback's league

"Everyone talks about the NFL being a quarterback's league. College football is a quarterback's league too," Tressel said Monday night in a telephone interview. "I'm so proud when I think back to when (Glenville coach) Ted Ginn and I talked to Cardale about going and taking a prep year (at Fork Union, Va., a military school.) Most kids wouldn't be willing to do that. It's exciting just to see what he's able to do now that he's grown up."
