Joshua Gunter / The Plain DealerAn ability to make big plays at big moments has lifted Glenville junior quarterback Cardale Jones into a leadership role with the state semifinalist Tarblooders.

CARDALE JONES FILE

WHAT THEY?RE SAYING
? Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr.: ?Talent-wise, I haven?t seen anybody [at Glenville] throw the ball like that since Troy Smith and Terry Jones in the ?70s.?
? Glenville teammate Christian Bryant: ?We all feed off of his energy. He shows up for big games.?
? QB coach Scott Niedzwiecki, who coached Troy Smith at St. Edward as a sophomore and junior: ?He?s as physically talented as anyone that I?ve coached, including Troy Smith. ... I?d say Car?s ahead of him at that age. Obviously, Troy went on to work hard and do some incredible things, but Car?s got that ability for sure.?
? Solon coach Jim McQuaide: ?He?s able to hit [receivers] in stride, which isn?t very easy to do. He throws it short and lets them run, and he throws it long and lets them run under it.?
? Jones on lessons taught by former Tarblooders QB Terrance Owens: ?I just learned how to be patient, how to have a presence in the pocket and [how] if you don?t think a play is going to work, change it up and believe in your teammates.?

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Glenville's Cardale Jones -- all legs, monster right arm and embracing smile -- has been one of the tallest players on the football field since Muny League.

But behind the luxury of a colossal offensive line, and with such targets as Latwan Anderson and Shane Wynn playing at hyper-speed, the 6-4 junior quarterback's development has been overshadowed.

Jones, a 17-year-old who has grown this season in ways that yardsticks don't measure, directs what may be one of the most potent high school offenses Northeast Ohio has ever produced.

His three first-half touchdown passes against previously unbeaten Solon last week has the Tarblooders (12-1) in the Division I state semifinals for the second time in school history as they play Massillon (10-3) on Saturday night at the University of Akron's InfoCision Stadium.

"He's a good leader," said Christian Bryant, Glenville's senior receiver, defensive back, kicker and punter. "He just stepped up and accepted the role of what a real quarterback is supposed to be."

Tarblooders make history on way to state final
Bob Fortuna, The Plain Dealer, November 29, 2009 6:33 a.m.
. . .
With 8:59 remaining in the game, Glenville quarterback Cardale Jones found Shane Wynn for a 71-yard touchdown strike, finishing off a two-play drive which took just 59 seconds. Christian Bryant's extra point put the Tarblooders ahead, 24-17.

"It was just a regular out pattern but they came down," said Wynn. "Cardale just pointed up, threw the ball and I made a big play."
. . .
Sparked by a 19-yard Jones-to-Evonte Dunn completion, Glenville went 51 yards in five plays with the clincher being Jones' 26-yard touchdown run.

Jones finished with 9 completions in 20 attempts for 199 yards and two touchdowns, and completed passes to seven different receivers.

Jones also rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Glenville held a 17-10 lead at intermission but it could have been more.
The Tarblooders, aided by Jones' 22-yard run and his 18-yard pass to Shane Bell II, marched to Massillon's 11-yard line with 11 seconds left in the half.

. . .

But Glenville QB Cardale Jones found Shane Wynn for an electrifying 77-yard catch-and-run TD with 8:59 left. The Tarblooders led, 24-17.
. . .

It?s difficult to think of the 6-foot-5, 210-pound Jones as a child. He hurt the Tigers with his legs (150 yards on 16 carries) and his arm (9-of-20 passing, 199 yards). He threw two TDs against no picks.

His 26-yard TD run, a tight-rope run down the right side line, with 5:02 left had the Tarblooders punching the inner city school?s ticket to the state championship game.

?It gives something for our community to brag on,? Jones said. ?There?s not much for the community to brag on where we?re coming from. But this will go down in history. No one can take this from us.?

. . .

A play after Foster had a long TD run called back because of a holding call, Jones faked handoffs twice and found Armis Greenwood over the top for a 44-yard TD pass. Jones, who sparked the drive with a 31-yard keeper on third-and-long, found Shane Bell II on a jump pass for the 2-point conversion and a 14-3 lead.

"It means a lot, because it's never happened before," said Glenville quarterback Cardale Jones, who threw for 199 yards and two scores while rushing for 150 yards and a score against the Tigers. "It's giving our community something to brag on. There's not much to brag on our community where we comin' from, but this will go down in history. Nobody can take this from us."

Jones looked very good last night. He has good arm strength, but most of his throws were of the fastball variety. He ran very effectively, including several clutch runs in key situations. His TD run was great, as he showed good patience staying behind his blockers until he was well downfield.

I would ask him what he thought about greyshirting, show him all the talent we are bringing in, tell him he would have a chance to compete with Miller/Grahm/Guiton when Pryor leaves. If he says no, I tell him you have an offer.

Kid has too much raw talent to pass up, and I believe that if QB doesn't work out you can play him out at WR.

As a QB, he is raw, but he has the arm strength, he doesn't always step into his throws, but give him 2-3 years in a system with a good coach and I think we would all be pleased...

Kids who greyshirt usually 1. don't have many other good offers and 2. come from families with enough money that they don't really care about footing the tuition bill for the first year.

Jones will probably get some great offers (rumors of Michigan coming soon) and, though I don't know for sure, coming from the Glenville neighborhood probably isn't from a rich family.

He seems like a perfect guy to offer because if things don't workout at QB, he could move to a different position and be a contributor on special teams. If things do end up working out, his potential seems to be off the charts.

I'd love to see what would happen if OSU developed better depth at QB so that it could redshirt kids and then have them start as 3rd or 4th year guys. I think when that depth is in place, it is a lot easier to take a flyer on someone like Jones.

While channel flipping the other night I came upon the Glenville-Massilon game. I don't follow HS football much, so I wasn't going to watch it, but I was enthralled watching their QB. IMO, he is a star. He looks to have a rocket arm, and he is very agressive when he runs. He lowered the boom on more than a few massilon DBs. The deep ball he threw near the end of the game on the 3rd and 5 was beautiful. It was a bit long, and went incomplete, but it was a great play action. Really reminded me of TS the way he sold the handoff.

I will definitely watch the state final just to see how he does when the pressure is really on.

I will say this fast so we can get back to Jones but just because he goes to Glenville does not mean that he is from that neighborhood. That Academy attracts kids from the greater Cleveland area not just the Glenville neighborhood.

Special time: Glenville quarterback Cardale Jones reflected on what his team's berth in the state finals means to him. The Tarblooders are the first Cleveland public school to reach the title game.

"I wanted to make history for our school and the program," said Jones, after passing for 199 yards and rushing for 150 yards and accounting for three touchdowns during last Saturday's win over Massillon.

"This gives our community something to brag about right now when there isn't much to brag about."

Success of Glenville football team a welcome boost to the community

Bill Lubinger, The Plain Dealer, December 04, 2009 2:41 p.m.
. . .

"We can say some things about this area, but not that much," Cardale Jones, Glenville's junior quarterback, said recently about the significance of a state title.

"We can say, 'OK, there's great football players who came through Glenville who are now in the NFL or college came from this area,' " he said. "But it would be really great to see a state championship at Glenville because coach Ginn always stresses that this is for the community, not for us. We're doing it for the community."

Jones looked pretty good tonight

Jones looked pretty good despite the loss. Pretty decent form, squaring his shoulders, good arm strength and accuracy. Combined with his size and mobility, I'd love to see him as a Buckeye.
