QB Art Schlichter (sad)

Schlichter sentenced to 10 years in jail
NewsCore
Updated Sep 15, 2011

Troubled former NFL quarterback Art Schlichter was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for his involvement in a million-dollar ticket scam.

Schlichter, a former Ohio State star, pleaded guilty in Franklin County Common Pleas Court to 12 counts of theft and one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

The 51-year-old, who has served jail time previously, had been accused of using his sports contacts to deceive would-be buyers into purchasing tickets to Ohio State football games and Super Bowl XLV in Dallas.

He was initially charged in April with a first-degree felony for allegedly bilking a 68-year-old widow in Dublin, Ohio.

Schlichter placed on house arrest while waiting to go to prison
By Kathy Lynn Gray
The Columbus Dispatch Monday October 3, 2011

Gambler and former Ohio State University quarterback Art Schlichter got his wish to go home today before he is sent to a federal prison.

After a 1:30 p.m. hearing, U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Terence P Kemp released Schlichter on his own recognizance and put him on house arrest. He will be electronically monitored and permitted to leave the house only for court appearances and doctor?s appointments.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman said Schlichter is expected to be staying with a friend in Columbus.

Schlichter has been jailed since February, charged with fraud in both state and federal court for swindling more than 50 people out of as much as $2.5 million in a sports-ticket scheme.

The former football star has reached plea agreements in both courts. On Sept. 15, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

The deals hinged on Schlichter, 51, being allowed to spend time with his family before being sentenced in federal court.

Complicating the matter was an Indiana warrant for Schlichter?s arrest, issued when he violated his parole after a stint in Indiana prison from 1994 to 2006.

The only bright spot in the current FUBAR regarding Ohio State players is that none of them yet has bankrupted so many other poor schmucks as Arthur Schlichter has. Nor, so far as I know, has any of them suborned suicide, unlike Artie baby.

Schlichter?s plea on hold as judge orders pre-sentence investigation
Former Ohio State and NFL quarterback Art Schlichter pleaded guilty to federal charges of wire, bank and tax fraud.
By Jeb Phillips
The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday October 12, 2011

Former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges yesterday in connection with a sports-ticket scheme that swindled more than 50 people out of as much as $2.5 million.

But U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson said he wanted a pre-sentencing investigation before he accepts the plea. That often takes about three months, court officials said.

Schlichter had agreed with federal prosecutors that he would serve 10 years, seven months in prison with the guilty pleas to wire, bank and tax fraud. If the judge were to accept the pleas, he also would have to accept the sentence, under federal law.

Watson said yesterday that he did not feel comfortable with the sentence without an investigation.

Schlichter pleaded guilty last month in Franklin County Common Pleas Court to related charges of theft and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. He received a sentence then of 10 years in prison. That sentence would run concurrently with the proposed federal sentence.

He will continue to be electronically monitored under house arrest while the federal pre-sentencing report is completed, Watson said.

Schlichter accused of cocaine use while on house arrest
By Kathy Lynn Gray
The Columbus Dispatch Thursday January 19, 2012

Former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter was in federal court today, accused of having cocaine in his system several times during his house arrest over the past few months.

Schlichter will be in U.S. District court on Friday for a hearing on the charges. U.S. marshals arrested Schlichter yesterday afternoon at the home in Columbus where he has been staying.

After his probation officer reported that he had tested positive for cocaine use on two occasions and had refused to report for testing on several other occasions. U.S. District Court Michael L. Watson ordered Schlichter?s arrest yesterday after hearing from the probation officer.

Schlichter appeared in court today in inmate garb and said nothing in front of Magistrate Terence P. Kemp. He was ordered back to Franklin County jail.

Schlichter sentencing postponed so former quarterback can undergo psychological exam
By Kathy Lynn Gray
The Columbus Dispatch
Tuesday February 7, 2012

Former Ohio State University football star Art Schlichter?s sentencing on federal fraud charges has been postponed so he can undergo a psychological exam.

?He recognizes that over the last 30 years he?s been in a pattern of bad repetitive behavior that he needs to stop,? said Steven S. Nolder, the federal public defender representing Schlichter.

?He doesn?t know why he?s unable to stop and he?s hopeful he can find the reason behind these things.?

He was supposed to be sentenced today.

Schlichter, 51, was jailed a year ago and pleaded guilty in federal court in October to fraud for swindling more than $1 million from more than 50 people in a sports-ticket scheme.

He was released on house arrest that month, but was jailed again Jan. 18 after tests showed he?d been using cocaine.

Court records show he was evaluated by mental-health professionals at Ohio State University Harding Hospital in early January and had planned a follow-up visit so his brain could be mapped and imaged. That didn?t happen because of his return to jail.

Today, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson ordered Schlichter?s sentencing postponed so forensic psychologist Jeffrey Smalldon can complete an evaluation.

Don't feel bad for the guy.... but it is sad to watch a man self destruct over and over again. Of course I also feel that, at this point, anybody that gets swindled by this guy... really deserves it.

Every time I see this thread bumped, my reaction is "Now what did I do with the Kaopectate?"

We need a "smiley" for utter, hopeless, desolate futility. What a disgusting, wasted life. :shake:

This is my reaction every time I see his name in the news.

I'm at a loss for words about Art, I have meet him a few times and he is from my hometown. Many have tried to support him in his addiction and his half measures didn't work Art. I really don't think he has a bottom and he will spend the rest of his life in the Land Of The Butt Pirates (prison).
