Purdue 60, tOSU 57, Feb 17, BTN

Other than the Buckeyes actually guarding the arc very well and playing some very strong on ball defense in the second half, this was a horseshit performance all around IMO. Frankly, I didn't think Purdue played all that great either, which is the only reason the Buckeyes didn't get butchered. I absolutely echo JWins' points re: the stretch of poor shot selection and the absurdity of not calling a timeout on the last possession. All in all, I thought the team showed an alarming lack of mental focus and situational awareness throughout the game.

Nope. Common misconception.

A wide-open jump shot is, for this team, a good shot, regardless of when in the shot clock it's taken. The fact our shooters didn't make them doesn't mean they were bad shots; just that we had a poor shooting night.

Agreed. Especially when they are 3 pointers. The TS% on the year from 3pt for Diebs is 65%, Lighty is 56%, and Buford is 53%. Those are good shots.

But in that style of game, the depth is what killed us, IMO. Purdue could send body after body up against ET in the back court and wear him down. If a guy picked up a couple fouls, no big deal...send in the next guy to molest ET. OSU couldn't afford to do that. One, the legs get tired enough playing 40 minutes without adding the extra effort on defense.

I disagree with that. I don't think Turner wore down at all. The reason Turner scored so much in this game is because Purdue decided to pressure him full-court for most of it. Doing that to someone like Turner creates almost a fast break situation once he crosses half-court because no one on Purdue can stay in front of him when they're in his face. Purdue finally realized this with like 5-10 minutes left and you'll notice as soon as Turner crossed half-court they ran back to inside the 3 point line and gave him space.

Diebs was not having a decent fourth quarter.

You're right, he was much better in the 3rd quarter.

Just when I was going to give this team could kudos for their defensing the pick and roll against Illinois, they come out and play defense like they did last night. Against Illinois whoever was getting screened stayed with the guy who had the ball and made it very difficult for them to make a pass into the low post. They seemed to be awfully confused last night and we really need to get that together before Sunday because if there is one thing Michigan State does well it is ball screen.

I haven't read the entire thread but I did notice that some guys complained that we took too many shots from three point land early in the shot clock. I guess what's the difference if you take them early or late in the shot clock as long as you have a wide-open look and most of the three-pointers we took were pretty wide open shots.

We just committed too many turnovers in the first half and played very sloppy basketball and you just don't do that and expect to win against a good defensive team like Purdue.

I also think that Turner sometimes keeps the ball too much and our other guys don't get involved in the offense. Lighty seemed to be more aggressive in the offense when Turner was injured and sometimes WB seems reluctant to handle the ball that much. It was a tough loss and hopefully we will bounce back this Sunday.

I agree with what you said. I just think in last night's situation (down big early, shots not falling), the team could have worked the ball around more to get higher percentage chances.

Two problems I have with taking shots as soon as the lead man reaches the 3pt line. 1) Players tend to rush the shots when they know someones running up behind them. A lot of the shots last night were off-balance or not squared up. 2) Rebounding. When there's no one within 15' of the basket, there's as much chance it goes out of bounds as going to either team. Many of last night's misses went the other way, with our defense in limbo.

I know our guys can make those shots, they were lights out on Sun. And I think Matta lets his guys shoot their way out of slumps, which I like. But, when that approach digs a deeper hole after several trips, I think you tell the team to go to the lane, take the easy shot, draw the foul, or kick it out to a shooter who's set up. Whether it would have worked last night, there's no way to know.

Excellent points except for the rebounding:biggrin2: we don't rebound very well in half-court sets:(

Especially when you're in the 1 and 1 with 8 or so minutes left in the game . . .
