Purdue 60, tOSU 57, Feb 17, BTN

I had to miss the game (:bonk::pissed:). Sounds like we just had to many turnovers, and a pretty bad night shooting the ball. Thats a shame because it could have gotten more people excited about the basketball team. I know this team has alot of leaders so hopefully they will be able to get up against MSU, if we play our game we will beat them

Tough loss, but OSU simply didn't do enough to win. Too many turnovers, too many misses on wide open shots.

Fortunately for both squads, Teddy Valentine stopped clamoring for attention and let the teams decide it down the stretch.

Didn't deserve to win tonight unfortunately. Took way too many poor shots in the 2nd half once we closed the gap. Needed to attack the basket instead of settling for 3's and long 2's and have to make foul shots. Diebler was absolutely the right man to take the last shot down three. I've got no problem with not taking a timeout either, we ended up with a wide open look and you can't ask for more than that. Purdue was playing great defense all night, I doubt giving them a chance to set up their defense and deny Diebler the ball would've given us a better look. Time to regroup for Sunday.

You said pretty much what I was thinking. Poor shot selection was a problem all game. Way too many long range shots with 25+ secs on the shot clock. I was really disappointed with the effort tonight. Several times OSU players lost a rebound/loose ball because they waited for the ball to fall in their hands, rather than moving to the ball.

For the most part, OSU played good D. PU made some tough shots, and when our D made a mistake, they made it count every time. Great game plan by PU. They knew we were going to key on Hummel, and they put their trust in everyone else to make shots. PU showed some great ball movement, at times dissecting our D, even when we had the matchups we wanted.

Was a winnable game, but no shame in losing to a team like PU. I had hoped that the way OSU looked in the last few games was going to be the norm, but they just didn't bring it tonight. Too many mistakes to beat a quality team. I still think this team can compete with anyone in the country, but they can't afford another showing like this. The game in East Lansing got a whole lot bigger. I know this team has the ability, they just need to play up to their potential every night. There aren't going to be any more gimmes at this point in the season.

I am concerned about the lack of bench minutes. I think PJ and Simmons have shown enough to be trusted for a few minutes here and there. I know it's hard to take our starting 5 off the floor, but they've played so far into nearly every game, it's becoming a concern whether they will have the legs to make a run in the tourneys.

The team needs to put this one behind them and play inspired ball the rest of the way.

Go Buckeyes!!!

I went to the game (student section across from the band) and it was a great atmosphere, though I expected it to be near capacity. Maybe the 630 time? To be perfectly honest, the team played horribly and Matta coached horribly. We have the momentum and are down by 2, yet we force quick, contested jumpers on 3 consecutive trips? C'mon Matta, call timeout and get an offense set up. We lost all momentum and Purdue got an 8 point lead back in a blink of an eye, because we were hurrying shots that we didn't need to. Also, 13 or so seconds left and no timeout...or when Dieb and Lighty got trapped with 6 seconds left? I hope we get BOTH timeouts we had left to use for MSU. Tons of turnovers and horrible shot selections. The free throw shooting was unacceptable as well, but it should be expected at this point. The refs were terribly inconsistent and apparently didn't notice Turner getting molested up and down the court all game. Holding a jersey and body bumping at every stride is not a legitimate defensive practice. With all that said...I left the game scratching my head and wondering how we only lost by 3 to a team like Purdue. As someone else pointed out, with everyone but Turner playing so poorly, you gotta like how this team is looking heading into March. I mean, if we play poorly in nearly every category and still almost beat the #4 team, we'll be alright. So despite all the negativity, I still have high hopes for this team and let's go get after it against MSU on Sunday. :osu:

Four reasons for the loss:

1. The refs killed us in the first half. They were swatting arms on all or our shots. I'm not going to blame that though, since we got close enough in the second half.

2. You're down by two, the crowd is going insane, Purdue takes a timeout, you get a defensive stop, and start chucking up 3's. Come on guys.

3. Call a timeout, set up a play, you have time to call another if nothing is open.

4. No answer for JaJuan Johnson. None.

He did? :tongue2: Joking aside, it's been said before, but this game was lost when we cut the lead to 2 with about 8 minutes to go and then spent our next 5-6 possessions either turning the ball over or settling for long shots that weren't great looks. I think we came back from so far down so fast that the players might have been worn out a little. In hindsight, Matta calling a timeout probably would have helped. Also, the fact that there was not a dead ball under the 8:00 mark meant that the under 8:00 timeout didn't occur until under 4:00 to go. That didn't help.

Nope. Common misconception.

A wide-open jump shot is, for this team, a good shot, regardless of when in the shot clock it's taken. The fact our shooters didn't make them doesn't mean they were bad shots; just that we had a poor shooting night.

Gak. Serious credit to Purdue for their defense last night. They dictated how the game was going to be played from the very beginning. I hate watching that brand of basketball, but Purdue plays it very well when the refs let them get away with it. And that is NOT a shot at last night's crew. I thought they were very consistent in letting both teams check, grab, and reach, with the exception of a 2-3 minute span in the 2nd half where they called some pretty weak fouls - Buford hand check, ET and-1, Johnson and-1, etc.

But in that style of game, the depth is what killed us, IMO. Purdue could send body after body up against ET in the back court and wear him down. If a guy picked up a couple fouls, no big deal...send in the next guy to molest ET. OSU couldn't afford to do that. One, the legs get tired enough playing 40 minutes without adding the extra effort on defense. Two, when the refs finally DO decide to call a reach, which you know will come sometime, OSU can't afford to lose whichever guy picks up the cheap one.

With that style, I really wish Matta had used Hill and Simmons last night, if even just to hack the shit out of the Boilers for a couple minutes.

Foul shooting lost this one.

I disagree. Purdue missed free throws down the stretch, too. This wasn't one of the nights where they were 2-11 like earlier in the season. You just can't make them all.

Poor shooting, poor offense, and turnovers lost this game. As well as Purdue winning it. Congrats, Boilers Fan!

You asshole.

Maybe for Buford or Diebler. Lighty can get hot with his jumper, but obviously wasn't last night. I don't think Turner has shown to be able to consistently knock down the 20 footers yet.

You live by the three, you die by the three. *ducks*

We didn't have as many wide-open looks from 3-point range as you seem to think we did.

My take on the game was that Purdue dominated us the entire game. Whenever we go close they found a way to keep the lead. Granted this was one of the sloppiest games i haave seen Ohio State play this year so we did not help ourselves at all. I think if we do play our best game and do not get down early we could beat Purdue.
