Purdue +14.5 at tOSU (ov/un 131.5) Tue 9 ET, ESPN

It seemed to me that Aaron Craft was beat alot by his man. Maybe one of his flatest defensive games in a while. The one commentator at halftime said that
Ohio States defense was really exposed and i kind of agree but only to a point. IF Byrd and Hummel don't hit all those 3's in the 1st half. It might have been a different game. Thank God Buford came thru in the clutch moments of the game. Even though it was Purdue, it was one of the best efforts that i have seen from the Boilers in awhile. They may have turned a big corner here in this one.

True enough, though the Buckeyes actually had a better % from 3 than did the Boilers.

It was close, but Purdue shot 11-19 (57.9%) and OSU shot 9-16 (56.3%), so they did actually outshoot us from three. However, I did like that no buckeye shot less than 50% from three and Hummel actually had the worst 3 pt % of anyone last night (2-6).

The Bucks did not play great D last night and their intensity was very inconsistent.

They are coming off their first win in Madison in a decade and lining up for a showdown with MSU on Saturday.

They were a bit flat on Tuesday.

Nothing to see here.

Buford woke up. There's plenty to see here. If he can keep that up throughout the rest of the season, it's NC time.

ball screens killed us.... so many lay-ups.... :(

Maybe it came at the right time, Right before Sparty.

Meh, ball screens were just a small part of the problem. The biggest problem last night was hustle. The layups many, many layups were a result of poor backside rotation, as were the the 25 FTAs (17 makes), which is an almost unheard of number for the Bucks. Slow to react, lazy fighting through screens, and terrible getting to ball side of the paint on backside help (looking at you Thomas).

I'm looking for the silver lining.... not much there. But I was proud to see Sulinger not lose his cool. I mean he got a nut sack pita in his face on that dunk, and Byrd takes him down by his head like Ndomgkon Suh, and on the one blocking foul he got called for the dude popped into him like Zack Boren... the dude took some physical abuse.

Happy with Buford.

Purdue DID shoot amazing percentage, but still we need to tweak our D some. We don't have shot blockers, other than Sam Thompson and Amir Williams. Craft can steal the ball but is not going to bother most people's shot. Smith Jr was hustling but not having a lot of effect last night.

Let's just hope it was a case of being in between Wisky and MSU and the Buckeyes thought they could handle Purdue easily.

Against MSU, on the other hand, I think we're going to see the Bucks at their best.

Exploration regarding why our defense looked so poor last night.
Here's what Craft, Purdue coach Matt Painter and Ohio State coach Thad Matta had to say about it:

Craft: "They spread us out with five people that can shoot threes or drivers on the floor. I think in the beginning, after they knocked down three after three after three, I think we started getting a little selfish on defense and not wanting to help each other out as much. That?s something that?s really tough to do, and tough to guard with the guys they can put on the floor."

Painter: "I thought Barlow did a good job of getting away from Craft. Craft can be so dominating as a defensive point guard, and he can kind of funnel you where he wants. I thought Barlow and (Lewis) Jackson kind of got on the run a little bit and got them playing from behind. When you're attacking bigs, instead of playing one-on-one with Aaron Craft, your percentages of making plays are going to be higher."

Matta: "Their game plan tonight was a little bit like Wisconsin?s. They were going to try to spread us out and shoot some threes, and theirs were going in. Then we probably locked on (the perimeter) a little too much. I don?t think we were as active as we needed to be.

"The matchups were a little bit tough. But quite honestly, we didn?t do a great job of, as we call it, KYP: knowing your personnel. We screwed up a couple times on where we were supposed to help, who we were supposed to help off of, and it cost us."
