I would have expected this from another department from up there seeing as I grew up about 15 min from Canton.

The officer blew this one out of proportion

First of all thank God the officers are OK. Its easy in this "Monday Morning" situation to critique these officers but JFC. You never EVER search a car with someone inside it. The reason for the officer's attitude, outside of being a asshole, was most likely caused by his HORRIFIC tactics. His attitude, and tone stayed angry because he kept thinking about being shot in the back of the head. But dont be mistaken, this was his fault.

I would've had the BM, and WF step back to my vehicle, which my partner, and I patted them down, then sat them down on the curb while my partner covered them. Then I wouldve approached the driver, asked him for his DL, Insurance, and Reg. Then asked If there were any weapons, drugs, or contraband in the vehicle. This all would've been avoided by doing this.

You can tell when an officer is jacked up, because he/she will always have those gloves on. Thats a pretty good indication of going "hands on" or wanting to go hands on, at least from the guys I know down here. Kinda like the pussy ass Circleville cop who put the TASER on my mother-in-laws back during a traffic stop. Fuck him, and fuck this guy too.

There ARE good cops out there, but keep that out little secret. I work in a much more dangerous area and never once treated anyone like that. I have led my department of 300 officers in uses of force, and going hands on, for 2 years, but that's the bad guys fault, not mine.

Actually, I think it is kind of the opposite. Not many people these days trust cops, and most juries will take a cops testimony with a grain of salt.

my wife's an attorney that's in court every day. juries almost always believe a cop's testimony word for word unless he basically acts like a total douche on the stand, or inadvertantly admits to lying.

I am not an attorney, but have had experiences in court (only one involving me as the defendant) and from what I have seen/experienced, that is not the case. Just my experience, though.

Also, it could stem from location. Many down here see the local cops as almost gestapo, but the sherriff deputies are held in higher regard. Propabably due to the fact that many of the local police down here act like those in that now defunct village on West Broad St that used to be nothing more than a speed trap.

Watching this story on Fox8 Cleveland this morning where they interviewed the chair of the Canton City Council about the exchange. His response was that fault lies with the General Assembly in Columbus for passing Concealed Carry, because if that was not state law, the situation would have never occurred---you know, because cops never had to worry about people having guns in their cars before Concealed Carry was passed.

The stupidity of Northeast Ohio politicians never fails to amaze me.

His attitude and the way he talks to folks is not only a [censored] poor way to get information, he is literally begging folks with less restraint than the driver showed to challenge him. I guarantee you that if he had stopped me with that attitude, I would not have responded in that submissive manner (because I am not as smart as the driver, who was inches from an ass beating). Grant you, Officer Dick would have beaten me - and then charged me with battery on an officer and resisting arrest to cover him kicking my ass, and I would be suing him in Federal Court with a mission to ruin his life, have him convicted, own his home and send him into poverty - but all that could be avoided if he'd just act professionally - like you do Leroy.

All he seems to do is increase the risks at the stop by heightening the anger and stress levels of all involved - and put his partner in greater danger by his own actions. Hell, now his partner can lose his job for misprision of a felony for not reporting his Butt Head partner. It is clear who the alpha dog is in that twosome.

And like you say, he wanted an excuse to go off on the guy. You know he has thumped some skulls before because he was having a bad day. He is just the type of power junkie cowboy that should never be allowed in law enforcement because of his propensity to abuse that power.

And, unfortunately, like he said, the "Blue Code" means that he can almost always rely on his partner to back him up in a bad shoot, or when he beats the [Mark May] out of some guy he's mad at - even if the guy is lippy and an ass - and brings cover-your-ass criminal charges to justify it.

If you* can't handle it, you do not need to be doing it. I don't want to hear about your stress levels. Get help or get out. Abusing citizens because you can't act professionally is not door number three.

Once you allow an ass like him to do his thing without reporting him you become a bad cop. Not saying you are, but the culture you work in tends to morph you all into the same mindset over the years. That explains threatening a civilian with a 10 round execution, well after the situation has been defused - the driver detained and in the back of a squad car with the weapon removed.

Cop thinks he's a hardass. Pretty simple. The "stupid human" comments are pretty clear. That's a superior attitude. Wearing a badge makes him above the law.

But cops don't get killed by ordinary people with guns. I own my fair share of weapons. Especially if the man is attempting to hand you his permit and he flat out doesn't/refuses to see it.

Officer (that's being nice) didn't like the look of the guy or his passengers, was too busy worrying about what he thought he caught them doing and if he was really in such danger pretty sure the weapon would have come out much much sooner.

I realize you aren't defending him. I'm just tossing in my share. I do have a particular side of my family and ...'ex' family well ingrained in law enforcement.

That said. Dude needs to lose his position. ASAP.
