New York's celebrity-obsessed Hamptons summer season got even sillier this week when a strange-looking, very dead creature washed up on a beach in Montauk at the far eastern end of New York's Long Island.

On Tuesday afternoon, a photo was posted on Gawker, the Big Apple's reigning gossip blog, which treated the Montauk monster with characteristic respect: "Good Luck With Your Hell Demons."

The animal looks like a bloated, hairless dog, except that it's got an eagle-like beak, a prominent brow ridge and a curiously elongated front paw.

But notice the right front hand/paw. It appears that the finger is being given by this beast thing, so maybe this beast thing actually had an encounter with her. She was in NYC last week.

Actually I think it's too big to be a vole (and it doesn't have a rodent's front teeth) but it's still just some poor dead animal that just looks freakish because things have been nibbling on it in the water.

My money is on it being a dog.

Well either that or the key master..

Look at the head/beak. It looks like a huge turtle with the shell removed. Just picture a shell on it's back and there you go.

Despite what cartoons teach us about biology, turtles don't wear their shells like a sumo suit. Their spine is integral with the shell.

They also don't have teeth.
