Program in turmoil (maybe not)

I don't get where this class was so poor from a recruiting front? One kid transferred to OU who is in the Final 4 and Giddens is getting offers from the likes of Kentucky. Those guys are not "bad" players.

The only way Grandstaff sees any playing time for OU is if they have a mass exodus following this season. If you think a player of Grandstaff's ability would contribute to this year's OU team, then I'm not sure what to say, other than you clearly haven't watched Grandstaff and/or OU play this year.

If I am the AD and a person with Thad's track record of success works for me I'd look at it like this;
  1. Their track record demonstrates an ability to be a high performer
  2. The current trend is unmistakably not up to standards
  3. So that makes me ask some questions;
    1. Have I properly communicated that this trend is sub par?
    2. If yes then what is the persons plan to improve? Do they need anything from me to help them be more successful? Have we, together, identified what has changed internally or externally? done a serious analysis to fix the issue and not the blame?
So without any inside info I look at the great transfer exodus as very likely a smart and capable coach saying to a bunch of guys who just aren't good enough that they need to get out. The very capable coaches answer to several of those questions if you will.

How they got here in the first place needs to be looked into but I'd venture a guess that his choice of assistant coaches is where the real issue lies and some shake up there is most likely coming as well. Lots of guys off to pursue the next phase of their career and such.

All that said however, once you are on the proverbial "performance plan" then your performance must improve or you are gone no matter what you did for the institution in the past.

Just my .02

Sometimes an organization needs a purge of unhappy people. When a purge occurs, it could be a good thing (it's always good to get rid of unhappy people), or it could be good people getting off the ship before it sinks. I'm sensing we have the former here, but time will tell.

Any concern that the purge consisted this week of 3 kids with the highest motors (along with Tate) and earlier of a kid who has signed with a final 4 outfit?
It is a screwed up culture if so.

Another concern is the assumption that is will be easy to back fill.
I dissent.
The "productivity" remains as in the 5 starters.
Greg Oden and Michael Conley aren't walking thru the door (elite recruits not worried about depth chart) and transfers are looking for PT and the path of least resistance.

We have a mess on our hands. Matta deserves a chance to fix it, but I'm not optimistic.

I don't think we are a tourney team next year and we are an injury away from not being an NIT team.

Basketball fortunes can turn with one or 2 elite players.
We have no momentum, buzz, swai da vi in regards to procuring the top shelf talent.

Matta needs to draw a flush on the river card next year.

Diddy isn't down with Thad's "The right guys stayed" comment.

Did Giddens, Harris, Mitchell have too much energy, grit, too high a motor, too invested in S&C, too much fast twitch, need to act more like Loving?

Something is rotten in Denmark.

From a pure production standpoint the losses were not great but when it wipes out 80% of the class and 3 of them were the kids who competed the hardest and the other landed at a school in the Final 4 - then it smells like lawn sausage.

Yikes, another Mitchell hits the road. I am not saying this because of Mitchell but after you have all of Grandstaff, Giddens, Harris and Mitchell leave this year...I would be surprised if we do not finish near dead last in the B1G next year. While this group was not overly talented, they were talented enough to be a pretty good team next year after they developed some cohesiveness and experience. I just don't see how Tate and KBD are going to beat anyone by themselves, unless maybe we kill it in the '16 class with so many exits? Don't get me wrong, Lyle/Thompson/K. Williams are pretty good but if we weren't winning with those guys plus the transferees, I can't see it happening next year (barring transfers coming in/huge '16 class).
Mitchell's thread isn't really the place to discuss this, so I'm moving my response to another thread. But the notion we're going to finish last in the conference next year is ridiculous pessimism. Tate, Lyle, Thompson, Loving and KBD form a very strong core and will have another full year of development. I don't expect us to win the league, but let's not go overboard here. The sky is not falling ... not yet, at any rate.

What if Lyle gets hurt?

He is the only thing resembling a PG we currently have on the roster.

We should petition the NCAA to ban ourselves from the NCAA Tourney, the NIT, The BIG torney, Vegas 16, CBI - bank it, and use it doen the road if we ever need it.

Count me in the camp that feels like we are at or near a low point in the program which is better than thinking all is well, when in fact, behind the scenes it isn't. This is cathartic and necessary. Better days follow periods like this and I'm therefore optimistic. Call me a half full guy but if there is an entitlement culture then let's shine a light on it and fix it. Matta has my full support during this process.

Put me in the camp that is mildly concerned but not much more. There's definitely a downward trajectory over the last 4 years, but that stuff happens -- especially in basketball where one or two recruits can mean that much. A couple misses here and there can make a HUGE difference. They've been on a bit of a rough stretch with recruiting (outside of Russell) -- guys haven't turned out to be what was projected. Is that a problem? Yes....is it a recruiting problem a development problem or just a bit of luck problem? I don't know.

That being said....they won 21 games this year. I remember the mid-late 90's....what did they win in Obie's first year...8 games? 8 fucking games? Hell, they won a total of 36 games over that season and the preceding 3. Only 13 conference wins in 4 years....and then they vacated two of those conference wins later. Shit, we're nowhere NEAR the low point in the program. Hell, this was still better than Obie's last couple years....and we didn't even end up on probation!

When you've got to cheat in order to land a guy like Boban Sovovic, you can't get much lower then that, no?

"If only there were a talented PG from Cleveland that could be recruited to fill AJ's scholarship, and play alongside Lyle (as well as in relief of)"

I wasn't aware he committed and he had officially been reclassified.

"Call me a half full guy but if there is an entitlement culture then let's shine a light on it and fix it."
Interesting way to fix it, by having 3 of your top 4 in terms of competitiveness, motor, S&C bolt.
