Preseason and Regular Season Polls (2015)

Oh for fucks sake Josh
Sorry my point about us not playing well enough happened to be in a rankings thread. The thread it's in doesn't really change the message.
It does change the message, because it adds a "which means _______ for the rankings" to the end of the criticism/observation.

Had you posted your criticisms in the offense thread, or the Cardale thread, the most blowback you would have received would have been to stay the course, trust the coaches, it's early, yadda yadda instead of these stringent rebuttals from verbose arguers like myself :p I tend to agree with you overall, just not in this context.

Premature rankings are a problem, but so is waiting.
Ranking FSU higher than we think they deserve is a problem, but downgrading them while staying undefeated is also a problem.

I'd move OSU down to 3 if MSU were healthier. The problem is, when do you move them back up? Realistically they shouldn't be able to do anything to truly impress pollsters until late November. What if they get back to their old ways in the next few weeks? Do you move them back up part way? All the way? What does it mean if it happens against terrible B1G competition? What does it mean that they played way down to the level of their terrible competition in week 2, struggled with a good mid major in week 3 and looked much better but still flawed in week 4? If they play better against PSU, would pollsters think they rise to the level of their competition?

There's also the matter of ranking teams according to where they will finish. I hate this practice but it's done by a lot of pollsters and that favors OSU more than anyone and helps cover up hiccups along the way.
I'm doing nothing of the sort. I'm not telling anybody what they should or shouldn't do, and I'm not insisting on anything. I'm saying we're not playing good enough to win a title, and the bitching in every other thread about our lack of results bears that out. Again, apologies if it happened to be in a rankings thread.
see above
This time last year we were righting the ship after a kick in the ass loss. This time this year we're still dicking around and wasting offensive opportunities. I'll take last years 3-1 squad over this year's 4-0 squad every day...but that's not really fair because I know how that story ends.
This time last year they were in a dogfight with Navy (3 pt game in 4th), had a nasty loss to VT, beat a hapless KSU program and were in a shootout with Cincy until late in the 3rd qtr. I don't think they had righted the ship yet. Obviously knowing the ending is cheating, but last year is a pretty clear indication that none of us know very much, even about the team we watch religiously.
So you can just dismiss Ole Miss because you expect them to fuck up at some point? I'm not talking about at some point, I'm talking abut right now. Right now, a lot of teams look better than Ohio State....and since the rankings are just a beauty contest, I'd say that means at least one of those teams has a better claim to #1 than we do. Clemson is going to Clemson, the SEC is going to thin itself out, Utah probably will lose to an Arizona school...but that hasn't happened yet, so you don't get to act like it has.
Only because the polls are stupid. Last year's FSU proves that.
No I shouldn't dismiss Ole Miss. I'd put them number one, but more because of how they look instead of who they beat. After that I see a ton of flaws, and for the sake of argument I mentioned how much I distrust Ole Miss long term.

It seems like FSU 14 did not get the same benefit of the doubt for 12 wins that Ole Miss 15 is getting for winning 4. Personally I felt all along that FSU was overrated and feel that way to a lesser extent about MSU & OSU now. So there's a disconnect on your end (and mine) between how we feel and what is fair for rankings in my imo.

BC has (right now) the toughest defense in the country, albeit inflated due to two FCS team, but they did hold FSU to 14 points, which is what No Ill scored. I'd bet that if No Ill wins the MAC (including their title game) and then win their bowl game and end up 12-2 or 11-3, they'll be around #20 or so in the final poll.

That's a substantial backpedal from calling NIU a team that "will likely win the MAC and end up in the top 20."

Actually, not. You first said NIU is "likely" (unqualified) to win the MAC and end up in the top 20. You then backpedaled to "if" they win the MAC and their bowl game, then they'll be around #20 or so in the final poll. There is a giant different between your two statements.
"They are likely to win the MAC, and if they do so, they should be ranked in the top 20." It doesn't look like a backpedal to me at all. I think you are trying to hard.

If I had first said "will win the MAC" and then said "if the win the MAC", then yeah. But I said "likely" which still has an "if" factor. Would it have been different had I used "provided"?

You don't think there is a difference between the following two statements?

- I'm likely to win the lottery and become rich.
- If I win the lottery, then I'll be rich.
Not if the two statements are in response to two separate comments. Even though I originally said NI is likely to win their conference, I didn't say they would. So using "if" in my subsequent statement, since it was in response to a different statement, doesn't constitute back peddling.

But, to appease your non-reading comprehension self, I'll use your your example:

Me: I'm likely to win the lottery.
You: You think you're likely to win?
Me: Yep, and if I do I'll be rich.

My second statement is not backpeddling from my first.

To make it simpler, I'm going to compare it to maybe the most convoluted series of movies in recent memory and throw in some other crap about some guy getting his face blasted for having the "wrong" subjective opinion. I get where you're coming from... just thought that was funny
