Presbyterian receiver Thomas killed in one-car wreck

CLINTON, S.C. (AP)?Presbyterian wide receiver Larry Carlson Thomas died in a car accident early Friday morning.

Thomas lost control of his 2005 Dodge Neon around 3 a.m. on Interstate 26 in Newberry County, authorities said. The car struck a guardrail, then hit some trees.

Thomas died at the scene, while a passenger was treated at the hospital and released. Neither were wearing seatbelts.

The 20-year-old Thomas was a graduate of Edisto High School. The sophomore physics major played in eight games last season, catching 41 passes for 539 yards and seven touchdowns.

Coach Bobby Bentley canceled Friday?s practice and a scrimmage Saturday.
?We are deeply saddened by the loss of Larry Thomas,? Bentley said. ?Larry was an outstanding and talented individual. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Larry. This is a tremendous loss to the Presbyterian College community.?

My thoughts & prayers are with the family & the College

Dude, that's poor taste.

Maybe after we find out why he wasn't wearing seat belts and his BAC, you may think differently. It's not like Bucky Katt was calling him a dipshit for losing control of a vehicle on an interstate at 3:00 am and not wearing seat belts as most-likely mandated by law.

Regardless of the circumstances, the taking of a young life is not a matter that should be joked about.

I've always thought that a = dv/dt was more applicable in car crashes (and falls) myself. It's also a reason I think a full size car (or SUV) with properly designed crumple zones is better to crash in than a compact or sub-compact, there's just more time to decelerate from impact to a stop. Properly designed with modern materials and safety features in mind, a 70's or 80's boat type car would be what I'd buy my kids.

Or tell them not to be driving dead-tired (pun unintended) and/or drunk at 3:00 am with no seatbelts.

At the risk of sounding like tibor, I don't find his loss of life all that tragic. "Tragic" implies something out of his control. Dan Potokar getting cancer at age 20 is tragic. A kid failing to negotiate his car on an empty freeway at 3:00 am and refusing to wear proper safety restraints is not.
