Premier League (Official Thread)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...hts-fox-nbc/index.html?sct=hp_t2_a8&eref=sihp

The Sports Business Daily reported on Friday that NBC Universal has emerged as the front-runner to pick up the U.S. rights to the English Premier League after a joint Fox-ESPN bid was rejected. The new rights deal would begin next season and is expected to be a three-year term.

The Sports Business Daily reported that NBC would pay the EPL around $83 million per year, an amount that's more than triple the $23 million per year that Fox currently pays for its deal.
I doubt NBC will sublease games to ESPN like FOX currently does. I've grown to like Ian Darke and Steve McManaman on commentary.

ESPN somewhat went above board by sending its own commentary team to games in England, something FOX Soccer doesn't do and I doubt NBC will do.

Hopefully, NBC doesn't just stick all games on NBC Sports Network, but I imagine the company will. The company could take advantage of its other channels (like during the Olympics). I mean, it would beat the Dew Tour or Triathlons on weekend mornings/afternoons on NBC.

My only question is, ESPN wants to own everything, why make a joint bid with FOX? Usually they go alone, unless they think the fight is pointless.

FSC gets their feeds straight from Sky (NaziCorp). NBC probably won't be able to do that for obvious reasons. Getting their own commentary teams shouldn't be that big of a deal provided they're British and don't sound like any of the seizure-inducing fuckwads on FSC.

Yeah, I was kind of contemplating what in the hell FOX Soccer is going to do now. A ton of the programming on FSC is based on the Premier League.

Even shows like "Premier League World" and "Barclays Premier League Review" are part of the package, so they can't show those anymore.

Considering FOX/ESPN probably offered 33-50 percent less than NBC (that's a guess), I keep thinking of Jim Delany and ESPN when ESPN low-balled the Big Ten, thus starting BTN. If FOX/ESPN did offer that much less, I'd take NBC's offer too.

I'd really think about putting Noon ET Barclays Premier League games on NBC national on Sundays or some Saturdays (the alternative is seriously horse racing or the Dew Tour).

FOX has nothing left but cup competitions. Their best league contract remaining is the Australian A-League.

I hope NBC dedicates some quality airtime and resources to these games that they're winning the rights to. I hope they are more generous with streaming than FOX was and that they show games that are occuring simultaneously on a weekly basis.

So you're in my boat. Because seriously, on Saturday/Sunday mornings on certain NBC channels (i.e. CNBC, MSNBC, etc.): We have "Lock-up" or some sort of infomercials on CNBC.

I can understand putting games on NBC Sports -- which they'll do -- but I imagine you can make a little more in ad revenue putting Arsenal/Chelsea than someone trying to sell me a grill.

Well, more money for FOX to blow on the Big Ten in a couple years (they already own part of BTN) :)

You got to be kidding me.... FSC is one of my favorite channels, going to be ruined if they lose rights to the BPL.

Their real loss was losing out on rights to Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1 to Al Jazeera. It wouldn't have cost them nearly as much to outbid them and they'd have quality options to fall back on.

If FOX loses the EPL, I'd like to see them add more matches from the Championship, SPL, Eredivisie & Bundesliga. If FSC goes that route it could be a big win for viewers - more games, more options.

I've never been there, but I have to figure Everton are like the Mets. Every chance they get to beat Liverpool is the biggest match of the year.

Mersyside Derby is full of much hatred. It's produced the most red cards in BPL history. If Everton finish ahead of Liverpool this season, it will be the first time they've finished ahead of them in two consecutive years since the 1930's.

It's been a great game this morning. Very open with each team getting plenty of opportunities to score.

I would be surprised if they didn't finish ahead a Liverpool. Everton has better players and gaffer.
