Premier League (Official Thread)

Southampton is selling everybody. I can't say I blame them either. They are getting stupid money for some of these guys. Maybe they'll have enough money to buy back Gareth Bale before the window closes. In all seriousness though, I hope they reinvest it well.

Yeah, I guess they thought they got as high as they could get with the big names they had. They've also had monumental financial trouble in the past, so I assume that has something to do with it. I'm sad to see it, they'll probably be headed back down this season, but they did get a lot of money to play with should they try and bring in comparable players. It really makes the Osvaldo signing last year that much more puzzling though...they never played him, loaned him out, sold him, then firesold. Florida Marlins-esque.

Southampton is pretty much the only club that consistently tries to make sure the English NT isn't rolling out a bunch of retarded gorillas and this is what happens.

That's part of why I think they'll be OK though. They have more promising young players that haven't even featured yet. If they reinvest even part of this cash wisely they'll be able to stay up.

The fact that they are pretty much the only source for credible English talent is both hurting them and helping them. On the one hand, it's part of the reason they're getting ripped apart in the first place. On the other hand, the fact that many of these players are English is driving up their fees to ridiculous levels.

As the season approaches, a few notes on Premier League Sportsbook events here at BP:

For the upcoming season, most of the activity is going to switch from vBets to a new Pickem pool. The reasons for this are several, but they mostly have to do with time. Bets are time-intensive to create. As the amount of time I have on hand has changed over the past year, it takes up hours that I simply don't have. I can't create bets more than a few days in advance because the odds are not set. Each bet takes about 5-6 minutes to set up if I get a block of time and get in a groove. That's a solid hour or more every week that I had to set aside. At first it didn't seem like much, but over the span of eight months those hours really add up. After a certain point I found the best time to create bets was on my lunch hour at work. Browsing gambling website on a work computer - even if it's not technically on company time - is not the best thing to be doing. I can't continue that way.

The Pick'em format has a few distinct advantages from my standpoint. Setting up a matchweek is much faster. I've already set up Week 1, and it took all of ten minutes. I can set up weeks in advance. If I want, I can go in and set up the entire season over the next several days and only have to come back to it to make updates when fixtures are rescheduled for TV or cup involvement. Picks are straight-up, win-lose-draw, so it doesn't require odds or consulting betting websites.

Pick'em is going to be the foundation of what we run for this season. That's not to say that there won't be bets too. It just won't be every single match on the fixture list. For now, I anticipate running a few season-long bets (champion, top four, relegation - the same ones as last season) and individual match bets for big matches with wide appeal.

Pick'em is available right now - go ahead and join. If we get a decent number or participants I'll set up a bet to reward the winner - similar to what's done for the March Madness pool here.

Season-long bets will start showing up in the coming hours.

To the core group of people who follow the sport and participated in bets last year, thanks for your understanding. Last year was a bit of an experiment. I was new to being a bookie, Premier League betting was new to BP, and we were on new software. Hopefully these changes will make things go a little more smoothly this season.

The first round of season-long bets has been posted in the Sportsbook.

In a change from last season, these bets will not remain open constantly. To do so requires near constant attention to league news and the ability to make instant updates. Instead, bets will be opened, closed, then re-opened throughout the season at set intervals. I'll keept this thread updated when a bet has been re-opened and how long that window will last.

Initially these are the season-long bets I'm putting out there:
  • League Champion, Top Four, and Relegation (open until the closing of the transfer window on 9/1)
  • Sack Race (open until the kickoff of the first match on 8/16)

Just created a thread here for anyone interested in doing Fantasy Premier League this season. We've been doing it the past two seasons, so we shouldn't have too much of a problem getting people to do it for a third consecutive year. Only problem is that I leave on Wednesday for 16 days & will be completely off the grid for the duration, missing the start of the season on the 16th. If anyone has any questions before I depart feel free to ask.

Log in to your account or create one if you haven't done this before. Once you've logged in, you need to pick your team. Once you've chosen your squad, go to "Leagues" at the top & select "Private League" & then "Next" right below. Enter this code (1014556-241889) under "Private league code", select "Join Private League" and you should be all set.

Posted bets for three matches for the opening week:

Manchester United v. Swansea City - debut of Louis van Gaal's new-look Red Devils.
West Ham United v. Tottenham Hotspur - debut of Pochettino at Spurs. West Ham won all three matches against Spurs last season. :smash:
Liverpool v. Southampton - the fire sale club pays a visit to their most frequent shoppers.
I hope to have some goalscorer bets to add to these but odds are not posted yet.
