Premier League (Official Thread)

Not really a surprise (on any level), but EPL Talk reported that Arlo White is expected to be named the lead commentator for NBC's coverage of the Barclays Premier League.

That's fine. Not in relation to his work in America, but what I recall from his English work, he sometimes screams a lot (when he's excited). Actual screaming

I hope Ian Darke finds a safe landing spot (after ESPiN's coverage concludes in a month).

They'll probably hang on to Darke for WC14, but I hope they'll lend him to NBC in the interim.

Pretty detailed description of the plans from NBC for its Premier League coverage (from Sports Illustrated).

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/news/20130416/english-premier-league-nbc-tv-coverage

Most games are on NBC Sports Network (not surprising), with about 20 games on NBC and 22 games on other NBC networks.

The best parts:

  • Premier League Extra Time (overflow channels) will be made available to everybody who already gets NBCSN. That means no extra channels to subscribe to a la Fox Soccer Plus.
  • Legal streams are being made available on computers and mobile devices at no extra charge for NBCSN subscribers. Fox Soccer 2Go charged something like $20/month for the privilege, and only showed a handful of games.
  • They are doing MOTD and MOTD2. I try to stream those whenever I can. I'm glad we'll have a US version now.

For as bad as Fox has been, I was still uneasy about NBC taking over when it was first announced. Now it's clear though - this is going to be a huge step forward.

The one thing I appreciated with FOX was when they decided to lease games to ESPN and try to broadcast games to those without the sports package (FSC was on the sports package or higher-tier for most cable/satellite systems).

I don't know how NBC compares, but I think the 42 (or so) games NBC will be broadcasting on NBC, USA, CNBC is comparable to the ESPN2 schedule (maybe more).

I just hope NBC doesn't go "First Take" on the EPL and try to create arguments on the subject.

With as much as they are borrowing from the BBC to start off I think it'll be OK. To me, BBC coverage includes plenty of debate and their personalities have their biases - but it never seems artificial, disingenuous, or with an intent to troll. That kind of approach would be perfect.

That's the one thing about ESPN's coverage of the sport (leagues not international). They have a bunch of Euros on the coverage and they don't seem to troll.

The writers (that ESPN employs to cover the European leagues) are different. They troll.

I've read a few complaints from Grant Wahl about there not being any American voices in NBC's coverage.

I'm glad. I'm not the kind who thinks that the game just isn't the same without hearing British accents. I think that's silly. I just want the best coverage possible, and it's pretty clear to me that America has yet to develop any TV analysts who can cover the EPL without making ham-fisted interjections about Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, the USMNT, the MLS or any other scarcely-related aspect of American sport. I'll be happy to go back to a Rob Stone-free existence.

I can understand fighting for that, but it's not our league (it's England).

World Cup coverage is different, since we'll probably have a team in the tournament, but this is a European league.

Three goals in seven minutes to save Spurs' UCL hopes. Still a lot of work to do, but their prospects for the run-in looking a bit better now. Hope this gives the team a boost of confidence - they have really needed it since that terrible week where they got dicked by Inter and choked against Liverpool.

I think people are going to be talking about this Reds - Blues match for a while. Controversey from Suarez (of course) after he pulled a Mike Tyson, and then an equalizing goal on the final touch in the 97th minute.
