That will happen at Saturday\'s jersey scrimmage, where the defense will square off against the offense for the right to wear the scarlet attire.

"The scrimmage is important for a couple reasons," said junior offensive guard Doug Datish. "One, for the jerseys, because everyone wants the privilege of wearing the red jersey. Two, the scrimmage is where we really begin to find personnel and where people can play."

One position that does not lack personnel and talent is wide receiver. An explosive unit that includes juniors Santonio Holmes and Roy Hall and sophomores Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Gonzalez and Devon Lyons. Although Holmes, Ginn and Gonzalez are considered the speed of the group, Hall understands his responsibility.

"Whatever role I play, I\'m going to do it to the best of my ability," Hall said. "I\'m the muscle of the group. Whenever (the OSU wide receivers) are in trouble with the defensive backs, I\'ll clean them up for them."

While Hall is willing to accept any role that is requested of him, Gonzalez understands the lofty expectations placed on the wide receivers.

"There has been a lot of praise heaped upon us," Gonzalez said. "I just hope that we will live up to it. It is an honor to play alongside these guys."

The receivers and linebackers are considered two of the best units in the country, while the defensive line tends to get overshadowed.

One advantage the defensive line will utilize is a healthy Mike Kudla, who tore his right labrum while making a tackle against Penn State last season.

"My goal was to come in and be as healthy as I could possibly be," said Kudla, a senior defensive end. "It\'s a matter of knowing when to turn it on and knowing when to take it easy."

Kudla recently broke the OSU bench press record of 555 pounds by benching 520 pounds, five times, which is the equivalent of a 610 pound lift.'; paragraph[1] = '"It\'s just one of those freak things you don\'t expect to happen," Kudla said.

The workout regimen in the offseason is one way to propel the defensive line to the caliber of the linebackers that play behind them.

"It\'s great to know they\'re back there, but we\'re the first line of defense," said junior defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock. "We need to make our plays and let them clean things up after that."

Saturday will be an opportunity to evaluate the progress of both the offensive and defensive units. Although bragging rights will be on the line, more importantly, the opportunity to wear the scarlet jerseys is at stake.

"You look a lot better in the scarlet jersey than the white," said Hall, whose offensive team currently holds the rights to the scarlet jersey.

"We\'re playing for the jerseys. I think in all my years I\'ve only had the red jersey for about two weeks," said junior cornerback Ashton Youboty. "We want to get those jerseys and we want to get the younger guys up to tempo."

A disadvantage the offense will face is the recent ankle injury to junior quarterback Justin Zwick. Zwick rolled his ankle in practice and is currently wearing a boot to stabilize the injury. OSU Associate Athletics Director for Communications Steve Snapp said the injury is considered minor and Zwick should be able to participate in drills in the near future.

The injury to Zwick and the one-game suspension of Troy Smith will not slow the offense down during practice. Redshirt freshman Todd Boeckman will see more snaps while Zwick heals and Smith continues to practice, knowing he cannot play against Miami.

"We get reps with all three quarterbacks," Hall said. "So whoever is under center is going to lead us. The ultimate goal is to get to Pasadena."
