Pre-Season Practice - 2005

IIRC Steinbrenner is an OSU fan, but that hardly has to be the reason a kid wears a flat billed yankees cap. Everyone and their mother wears one of those nowadays.

It was thought that with the talent of Freeman, a 3-4 is not outside the realm of possibility with Bobby being the standup LBer. Not as the standard formation, but as a possibility. I'd say with how huge he looks, this could be very possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even with a 3-4, Freeman is still on the 2-deep. Schlegel, D'Andrea, Caprenter, and Hawk...right? That's just sick. Plain sick.

Depends, we haven't seen much of Freeman yet. I agree that seems like the early favorite for the lineup, but the coaches (who watch their words thanks to mr. discreet as our HC) can't stop talking about how they have to get him onto the field. I can easily see him getting out there occasionally as more than a backup.

The 3-4 would allow more OL access to the LBs and thereby take away their strength of flowing in open space. Unless there is some major improvement on the DL and tOSU suddenly has a dominant NG type who can force a consistent double team...I don't see the 3-4 as anything more than an occasional change up to cause more preparation for the opponent.

I realize Texas is smart enough to realize Miami is weak, but would we be able to pull this formation off against them, since they tend to have lesser athletes? I have no idea what their OL size is like. That could enable us to use it as a mixup formation more to keep the opposing OL guessing. There were a number of plays during the Alamo Bowl (IIRC) where Kudla came off of the line, we had three DL, and four "LBers" threatening to blitz. The OL and RB had no idea who would be coming.

I would think Miami would be used to get good reps for the DLman that need the work. It has nothing to do with lesser athletes but more of what your defensive philosophy is. With guys like Barrow, Doug W, Gholston, and Wilson would be wasted on the sideline. Looking at the recruiting patterns, the 3-4 is not going to happen much IMHO.

I think you're referring to a zone blitz, not a 3-4. Or are you saying the Kudla lined up as an LB, not a DE? I don't recall him doing that, but I know he's falls back into coverage a bit on zone blitzes...the most memorable being his dropped INT in the scUM game.

No it wasn't a zone blitz where he fell back into coverage, unless pulling off the line before the snap and standing as a LBer is also considered a zone blitz. I just remember him standing up threatening to blitz at least twice when I went thru the alamo bowl tape the other day... and we had three DL and four LBers threatening from different angles before the snap.

That is the Will Smith/Hybrid Leo look...I know what you are referring to. It is essentially a zone blitz but Kudla plays up and the LBs prowl.

You may have noticed the  in that post, it was a joke :)

Why hasn't anyone been outraged that Santonio is wearing socks WITH SANDALS? This is the kind of detail that loses big games and Heisman trophies, I'd be surprised if Tress didn't suspend him for that

On Santonio's interview with the local fox station in Columbus he says he wants 80 catches and that this season is the "money year" for him...seems like is pretty motivated ...I wouldn't mind a season like that even if it meant Santonio jumping to the NFL

I sent an e-mail to a friend of mine on that very subject matter. While I wear some wacky stuff from time to time, including my Captain Morgan party crew pajama pants, socks and sandals are a definite no-no. It turns out Santonio has a weakness after all.
