The reason that the popups would open up in IE is because they are not actually coming from the web, they are coming from adware crap installed directly on your machine. If you still have problems, I'd recommend running spybot as well. And dumping AOL would be very wise :banger:

I actually hate SP2, it makes life a pain, but it's neccesary to prevent all the new spyware (now that SP2 is out, people making spyware know what holes got fixed. They can write scripts for those holes and get anyone slow on downloading SP2) and it does work very well as BrutusMaximus mentioned.

Speaking of SP2 for XP....anyone know if they fixed the damn thing. I have XP and it automatically downloads the updates but apparently according to my ISP the first release had some major problems. I downloaded and installed it and it screwed my computer up bigtime. Had to use the feature (can't remember what it's called) that allows you to go back to a point on your computer in the past before I downloaded the SP2. Since then I've not allowed any updates because I'm not sure if this update it tells me it has is a good one or a bad one. Anyone have any ideas?

I have installed SP2 on several machines, and had no problems with it. It does seem to have issues with certain hardware, at least that's what I have been told. Tell you what the real problem is..........Gateway, Dell, Compaq, HP, Emachine.........there are your problems. POS machines use shitty hardware that is very touchy.

Well put.

edit: While low-quality hardware is a very troubling issue, the biggest issue is the software these companies bundle with their computers (Dell's that I've seen are ok, but the other ones are pretty bad). They knowingly install spyware-type programs on your computer as factory default.
